The best start to a football career, bar none. Patrick Mahomes has been simply sensational since joining the NFL in 2017. Two MVPs, three Super Bowl titles, three Super Bowl MVPs, and a growing list of records have already landed him in the conversation as one of the three greatest quarterbacks ever.
But along with his dominance on the field, Mahomes has also embraced the modern-day athlete mindset — building a business empire off the field through a growing list of investments and ventures. The Kansas City Chiefs superstar is building something big in and around the city he now calls home.

Patrick Mahomes’ Sports Team Investments
Kansas City Royals
Even though he’s a Texas native, Mahomes has embraced Kansas City just as much as it has embraced him. In 2020, he became an official minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, bringing star power to the region’s MLB squad. The move was one of his first significant steps toward building a sports empire — and gave the Royals some extra buzz as they aim to return to playoff contention for the first time since their 2015 World Series win.
Sporting Kansas City
In 2021, Mahomes expanded into soccer, becoming part of the ownership group for Sporting Kansas City in MLS. While his time with the team hasn’t brought much success on the field — with two bottom-five finishes and a 15th-place ranking in 2023 — it still reflects his commitment to growing the Kansas City sports scene across leagues.
Alpine Racing Team
Mahomes and longtime teammate Travis Kelce joined forces again to invest in Formula One, becoming part of the Alpine Racing Team ownership group. Since their involvement, Alpine has posted back-to-back sixth-place finishes in the Constructors’ Championship standings in 2023 and 2024.
Kansas City Current
In 2023, Mahomes joined his wife, Brittany, as a National Women’s Soccer League Kansas City Current investor. Brittany has been involved with the team since its launch in 2021, and Patrick’s addition brought even more attention. That season, the Current finished fourth and won the Summer Cup, continuing to build momentum in one of the fastest-growing leagues in U.S. sports.
Potential Pickleball and WNBA Franchises
Mahomes also joined a star-studded investment group—alongside Nick Kyrgios, Rich Paul, and Naomi Osaka — that launched a professional pickleball team in Miami. This follows a growing trend, with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Tom Brady also backing teams in the fast-rising sport.
Meanwhile, the ownership group behind the Kansas City Current has made it clear they want to bring a WNBA franchise to the city. With Mahomes’ involvement and the league’s public interest in expansion, that could become a reality sooner rather than later.
Food Investments: Whataburger, 1587 Prime
Mahomes has entered the food business outside of sports by joining an investment group to expand Whataburger locations across Missouri and Kansas. Thanks in part to his efforts, 14 new outlets have opened in the Kansas City area, 11 of which are operated by KMO Burgers, the group he’s aligned with.
In 2025, Mahomes and Kelce teamed up again on the culinary front to launch 1587 Prime, a high-end steakhouse inside the Loews Hotel in Kansas City. The name is a nod to their jersey numbers (15 and 87), and the restaurant adds another high-profile stop to downtown KC’s food scene.
Mahomes is still rewriting the NFL history books every season. But off the field, he’s making just as much noise — and shaping the future of Kansas City in the process.
