The NFL offseason is entering its final stretch, and several high-profile free agents remain on the market as teams prepare for training camps to open later this month. For franchises with championship aspirations, finding established veteran talent can offer a critical depth boost ahead of the grueling 17-game season.
One of the most intriguing names still available is former All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., who is coming off a solid 2025 campaign with the Washington Commanders.
As front offices assess their final roster holes, the versatile weapon is generating significant buzz as a potential late-summer addition for elite contenders.
Chiefs Emerge as Top Destination for Free Agent Deebo Samuel
After his contract with the Washington Commanders was officially voided in February 2026, the 30-year-old playmaker remains on the open market looking to sign a new deal. While the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals have shown interest, a potential union with the Kansas City Chiefs is gaining serious traction.
Samuel proved he can still produce at a high level during his single-season stint in Washington, where he caught 72 passes for 727 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games. According to PFN’s WR Impact Metric, he posted an impact score of 77.0, ranking 26th in the league. Landing with the Chiefs would offer the physical wideout a chance to chase another Super Bowl ring.
PFN’s Cameron Sheath evaluated the connection, highlighting the historical irony of Samuel potentially joining his former Super Bowl nemesis.
“The two times Samuel made it to the Super Bowl, it was Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs who walked away with the Lombardi Trophy. It would be somewhat ironic, then, if Samuel’s third, and potentially final, visit to the big game was as a member of the perennial AFC favorites,” Sheath wrote.

The fit makes sense for a Kansas City offense currently looking for new pieces while trying to maximize its championship window.
“The Chiefs added a lot of young talent in this year’s draft, with a new era on the horizon, but are clearly still in win-now mode with several key veterans on the roster,” Sheath continued. “Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce are likely to dominate targets, but with Kelce slowing down each season, Samuel could build on the role left vacant by Hollywood Brown in free agency.”
Adding a dynamic playmaker like Samuel also provides crucial insurance for the passing game as quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues his rehab. Mahomes is working his way back from a torn ACL and LCL suffered in December 2025, and having a premier run-after-catch threat would alleviate physical burden early in the season.
“There are already multiple mouths to feed in Kansas City, but with question marks around Patrick Mahomes’ mobility after his ACL tear, that could be a good thing. Samuel’s versatility makes him a dream fit for Reid’s imaginative offense, and at 30, the receiver might prefer a lighter workload,” Sheath added.
With training camps approaching, the market for Samuel is heating up. If the Chiefs finalize a deal, they will secure an elite playmaker to keep Andy Reid’s offense dynamic.
