The NFL offseason often reshapes contenders in unexpected ways, and this year is no different. After a disappointing finish, the Kansas City Chiefs face questions about their offensive firepower and future direction.
As speculation builds, one emerging free agent has quietly drawn attention, with multiple teams reportedly circling as the market begins to take shape.
Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills Position Themselves for Explosive Wide Receiver Help in Free Agency
The Chiefs’ 6-11 season has forced a rare period of reassessment. With roster turnover looming and offensive consistency slipping, adding speed at wide receiver has become a logical priority.
During a February 9 segment on CBS Sports HQ, NFL writer Ryan Wilson identified Rashid Shaheed as a realistic target and outlined how several teams could pursue him.
“He’s (Shaheed) not going to be a wide receiver one. He could be a wide receiver two or three,” Wilson said on CBS Sports HQ. “…I think he makes a lot of sense for teams that need speed… The Buffalo Bills might be interested… The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs are two other teams that could be in the market for speedy wide receivers to help diversify their wide receiver room.”
Wilson’s evaluation frames Shaheed as a complementary weapon rather than a centerpiece, but his production still stands out. Across recent seasons, the wideout has totaled 13 touchdowns, reinforcing the “explosive” label attached to his free agency profile.
While his half-season with the Seattle Seahawks produced modest numbers, his impact extended beyond standard receiving metrics, including a kickoff return touchdown in the divisional round that highlighted his game-changing speed.
The Chiefs’ interest stems from roster uncertainty. Hollywood Brown finished the year with 49 receptions for 587 yards and five touchdowns, while Tyquan Thornton added 19 receptions for 438 yards and three scores. JuJu Smith-Schuster contributed 33 receptions for 345 yards and one touchdown, and questions remain about Travis Kelce’s future.
Although Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy provide a foundation, Shaheed’s vertical speed and versatility could add another dimension to Patrick Mahomes’ offense while strengthening depth.
Buffalo Bills offer a different path but similar logic. Wilson suggested Shaheed could pair with Keon Coleman, bringing downfield reliability and special teams value. His ability to influence both offense and return units makes him attractive for teams seeking efficiency and explosiveness without committing elite-level money.
The Seahawks, meanwhile, remain part of the equation after winning Super Bowl LX over New England. The Seahawks possess significant cap space and must decide whether to retain Shaheed or let him test the open market.
With established receivers already in place, finances could ultimately shape their decision, as Wilson noted when discussing the speedster’s potential market.
Shaheed’s free agency reflects how contenders target specific traits rather than headline names. For the Chiefs and the Bills, the attraction is clearly proven scoring ability, field-stretching speed, and versatility.
Whether that combination results in a deal will depend on cap maneuvering, roster priorities, and how aggressively each team moves once the market fully opens.
