The Kansas Chiefs have had a rougher-than-usual start than they’re used to. They entered their Sunday night matchup against the New York Giants with a 0-2 record, which hasn’t happened since 2014.
When you’re a team used to not just dominating your division, but shredding teams through sheer will and going to five of the last six Super Bowls, it’s easy to see why tempers might be boiling over when you’re in a tight matchup against the Giants.
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Chews Out Travis Kelce
At one point in the game, Kelce reached the sideline after a possession, and Reid began berating him as coaches are wont to do. Reid bumped Kelce’s chest in the typical coach move that can mean, “pay attention” or “get your head out of your a**.”

Either way, Skip Bayless chimed in with a dig at Kelce, posting, “Uh-oh, Swifties: Andy Reid just chewed out Mr. Swift.”

These kinds of moments are typical in football. While fan reaction will be humorous, Kelce and Reid’s relationship goes back so far and includes so much mutual respect and admiration that it’s almost silly to take their sideline altercation seriously. Instead of it being a rupture, it’s their relationship; it’s like your dad chewing you out because you did something dumb, even though you’re 35 years old with a house and an IRA.
When asked about it during the halftime break, Reid downplayed the barking at Kelce, saying, “That’s okay, we need some juice, so that’s good.”
The Chiefs started the game slowly, as they still have trouble generating much of a running game. They started with a 12-play, 36-yard drive that had Mahomes passing on almost every play, leading to a Harrison Butker 54-yard field goal that put the Chiefs up 3-0.
The Chiefs’ next drive followed the same pattern: Lots of Mahomes (including him recovering a fumble on a bad lateral) carried the load on the ground and through the air, leading to another long field goal.
The Giants have kept the game close, but the Chiefs finally scored their first touchdown midway through the third quarter. Mahomes completed a five-yard pass to Tyquan Thornton to put the Chiefs up 16-6. It was one of the only drives on which they were able to mix the pass and run effectively.
For his part, Kelce has been relatively quiet so far. He has four catches for 26 yards and no touchdowns.
