Former NFL QB Poses 1 Major Question for Sean Payton After Broncos Promote Davis Webb to OC

Former NFL QB questions Sean Payton’s logic after Broncos elevate Davis Webb to OC, wondering if the move truly fixes Denver’s offense now?

The Denver Broncos filled their offensive coordinator vacancy Monday by promoting passing game coordinator Davis Webb. Logically, the next question becomes what it means for the Bronocs’ offense. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel framed that question perfectly after the news broke.

What Davis Webb’s promotion means for the Denver Broncos

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Webb, 31, agreed to remain in Denver after interviewing for three head coaching jobs and drawing interest from outside coordinators. Daniel quote-tweeted that report with the issue now hovering over the Broncos’ staff structure.

“The question I want to know,” Daniel posted on X,” is he going to take over play calling from Sean Payton?”

Payton has called plays since arriving in Denver in 2023, the same model he used for most of his tenure with the Saints. Webb’s elevation follows one year as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator and comes after the club fired former coordinator Joe Lombardi. He was fired following Denver’s 10–7 AFC Championship Game loss to New England.

Webb becomes one of the league’s youngest offensive coordinators. He has never called plays at the NFL level. A 2017 third-round pick of the Giants, he spent time with the Jets and the Bills before joining Payton’s staff in 2023. His rapid rise included head-coaching interviews with Baltimore, Buffalo, and Las Vegas before he withdrew from the Raiders process and opted to stay in Denver.

Denver’s current offensive structure is identical to Payton’s long-running approach in New Orleans. With the Saints, the coordinators handled game planning, while the head coach retained play-calling on Sundays.

Denver returns its top four receivers, its starting offensive line, and a quarterback on a rookie contract. Nix is coming off a season-ending ankle injury, which he suffered following the team’s divisional round victory over the Bills. He is expected to be ready to start the season. Those factors make the division of duties between Payton and Webb a point of interest going forward.

This all highlights how close Denver came to losing Webb. That background suggests the promotion was as much about retaining a rising coach as replacing Lombardi.

Spring workouts will offer the first hints of how the partnership functions. Until then, Daniel’s question captures the debate surrounding a Broncos offense that enters 2026 with higher expectations than at any point since the Peyton Manning era.
