There is a moment before the Super Bowl truly begins, a fragile pocket of quiet when the noise hasn’t arrived yet, when the lights are bright, but the story hasn’t started. On Sunday night in Santa Clara, that pause will belong to Charlie Puth.
Before the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots play each other, Puth will perform the national anthem, opening Super Bowl 60 with a voice considered pitch-perfect.
A Look at Charlie Puth’s Age and Career
Charlie Puth is 34 years old. Born on Dec. 2, 1991, in the coastal town of Rumson, New Jersey, music came early in his life, not as a dream but as a language. His mother, Debra Puth, a music teacher and commercial writer for HBO, began teaching him piano when he was four years old.
His father, Charles Otto Puth Sr., a builder and real estate agent, filled the house with classic R&B, introducing his son to artists like Marvin Gaye. Growing up alongside his younger twin siblings, Stephen and Mikaela, Puth’s childhood was structured, but creative.
In the early 2010s, before pop stardom felt inevitable, Puth was just another young musician uploading videos to YouTube. His channel, “Charlie Vlogs,” was a mix of original songs, humor, and casual experiments, less brand-building and more self-discovery.
That slow-build authenticity caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, who invited him to perform on her show in 2011. Even then, Puth did not rush. He continued releasing music independently, including his 2013 single “Ego,” before eventually signing with Atlantic Records.
The turning point came in 2015. “Marvin Gaye” introduced him to the Billboard Hot 100, but it was “See You Again,” his collaboration with Wiz Khalifa for Furious 7, that changed his career. Written as a tribute to actor Paul Walker, the song spent 12 weeks at No. 1 and earned three Grammy nominations. Over time, it took on additional meaning, including a tribute performance honoring Kobe Bryant.
If “See You Again” made him unavoidable, “Attention” made him unmistakable. The spare, sharp-edged single peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has gone over 2.35 billion streams on Spotify. Offstage, Puth has proven equally influential, co-writing and producing songs like “Stay” by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber. He also has fan favorite songs such as “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” “One Call Away,” “Light Switch,” and “Left and Right.”
He has an upcoming album called “Whatever’s Clever!” that will be released in late March.
