Who Will Be Stepping Into Super Bowl Spotlight To Sing the National Anthem?

Charlie Puth will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Super Bowl 60. It will be the 34-year-old singer’s first appearance as a performer at the event.

Puth, a Grammy Award nominee, told Rolling Stone he pursued the opportunity himself by recording a demo with a Rhodes keyboard. He said he sent it to Roc Nation, the NFL’s entertainment partner. His recording eventually reached NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the invitation followed.

“I actually have always wanted to do this,” Puth told Rolling Stone. “I just want to do my own thing with the hardest piece of music ever written, and I want to show people that I can do it.”

Born and raised in Rumson, New Jersey, Puth studied piano and jazz before attending Berklee College of Music. He first gained national attention through YouTube covers. His 2015 single “Marvin Gaye,” featuring Meghan Trainor, launched his mainstream career.

Then he became nationally recognized following his collaboration with Wiz Khalifa on “See You Again,” which spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The hit song from the “Furious 7” received a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.

Puth has released three studio albums. His fourth project is scheduled for release on March 27. He will become the first New Jersey native to perform the Super Bowl national anthem since Whitney Houston in 1991. Puth told Rolling Stone he considers Houston’s rendition the standard.

“She’s the best one ever done. That and the Chris Stapleton one,” Puth said. “I’m going to be inspired by what Whitney did, but I can’t ever touch what she did.”

The anthem performance is expected to last about 90 seconds to 2 minutes. Puth said he will sing live while some orchestral elements may be prerecorded to ensure stadium sound quality.

The national anthem is part of the NFL’s pregame program, which also includes performances of “America the Beautiful” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” ahead of the Apple Music Super Bowl 60 Halftime Show.

Bad Bunny Headlines Halftime Stage

The national anthem will lead into a night centered on global music star Bad Bunny, who is set to perform the Super Bowl 60 halftime show. The Puerto Rican artist arrives after winning Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

Bad Bunny has crossed genres from reggaeton to Latin trap while collaborating with Cardi B, Drake, and J Balvin. His selection marks the first time a Spanish-language performance is expected to anchor the halftime show.
