The Los Angeles Chargers have already reshaped their wide receiver group, but speculation is growing that another move could be on the horizon. With the NFL trade deadline approaching, a Green Bay Packers pass catcher has emerged as a realistic candidate, raising the question of just how much stronger Justin Herbert’s offense could become.
How Would a Romeo Doubs Trade Impact Justin Herbert?
At the center of this conversation is Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ quest for a deep playoff run. While the team has added new weapons in recent drafts, the idea of acquiring Romeo Doubs presents an intriguing opportunity to bolster the roster. Doubs has recorded 16 career touchdowns, including eight during a breakout 2023 season, which gives him a proven ability to find the end zone.

For Herbert, a trade for Doubs wouldn’t completely redefine the offense, but it would significantly improve his supporting cast. Depth at the receiver position has often been a deciding factor in long postseason runs, and Doubs’ experience would provide valuable insurance if injuries affect the team’s top targets. The appeal for the Chargers is the chance to strengthen their receiver rotation without sacrificing premium draft capital.
The Packers entered the 2025 season with remarkable depth at wide receiver, creating a challenging situation for veterans like Doubs. According to PFSN’s Tim Crean, Doubs is in the final year of his rookie contract without a fifth-year option, meaning Green Bay may look to trade him now while he still holds value. The team’s decision to select Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft only intensified this roster crunch.
As PFSN’s Jarrett Prendergast noted, Golden’s arrival made an already crowded receiver room even more difficult to manage. With Golden, Jayden Reed, and Doubs all in the mix, Doubs became the most realistic trade candidate. Crean also mentioned that if Reed and Christian Watson return from injury in time, the Packers would have enough flexibility to seriously consider a trade, opening the door for a team like the Chargers.
Prendergast highlighted that Bleacher Report also identified Doubs as the Packers’ most logical trade piece, even outlining a potential deal with the Chargers in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick. From Green Bay’s perspective, this move clears roster space and adds a future draft asset. For the Chargers, it represents a low-cost move that gives Herbert another reliable option.
Doubs’ career has been marked by modest but solid production. His best season came in 2023 when he caught 59 passes for 674 yards and eight touchdowns. While he may not be seen as more than a WR3 or WR4, his ability to contribute situationally makes him a valuable asset.
Adding Doubs would create even more depth for the Chargers’ receiving corps, which already features Keenan Allen, Ladd McConkey, and Tre Harris. It’s exactly the kind of under-the-radar move that could pay off during a Super Bowl chase.
