The Los Angeles Chargers saw their season end in disappointment once again. Despite a successful regular season and a playoff berth, the Chargers were eliminated in the first round by the New England Patriots. One area where the Chargers struggled most was the offensive line. Quarterback Justin Herbert had little time to operate for most of the season, and that ultimately did the Chargers in during the playoffs.
Another position where the Chargers could benefit from an upgrade is wide receiver. There is one disgruntled veteran who will be looking for a new home this offseason, and it makes sense for him to stay in state.
Chargers Pegged as Fit for Disgruntled Wideout Brandon Aiyuk
There is no question that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has played his final game as a 49er. After missing this past season while recovering from a torn ACL, the relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers has soured.
CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani predicted the Chargers could be among the teams interested in Aiyuk, noting Los Angeles is shifting offensive philosophy under new coordinator Mike McDaniel.
“The Los Angeles Chargers are undergoing a change in offensive philosophy in swapping Greg Roman for Mike McDaniel at coordinator. It’s clear that the Chargers need to upgrade the depth on the offensive line, but they could be in the market for a new weapon, too,” Dajani wrote.

Aiyuk will be 28 entering next season, often considered the prime of many players’ careers. Through the first five seasons of his career, Aiyuk has caught 294 passes for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also has 2 rushing touchdowns.
It remains to be seen whether the 49ers will release Aiyuk or attempt to trade him. Either way, he is likely to play for a new team, and the Chargers appear to be a fit.
Chargers Offense Should Be Much Improved
One of the biggest coaching hires of the offseason so far is the Chargers’ hiring of Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator. He is an innovative offensive mind and should help make the Chargers more explosive in both the running and passing game.
During his time in Miami, McDaniel consistently had strong offenses when his key players were healthy. Herbert will be the most talented quarterback he has worked with in his career, and the potential of their offense should excite many fans.

It is also worth noting that McDaniel and Aiyuk worked together in 2021, when McDaniel was the 49ers’ offensive coordinator. He could give the Chargers valuable insight into Aiyuk and whether he is someone they should pursue this offseason.
The Chargers need to improve their offensive weapons, and if McDaniel signs off on Aiyuk, there is a strong chance the disgruntled receiver could become a Charger.
