Chargers Star Ladd McConkey Makes Feelings Clear on Rumors of Keenan Allen Returning to Los Angeles

After a spectacular rookie season, how does Ladd McConkey feel about the Los Angeles Chargers potentially bringing back Keenan Allen?

The Los Angeles Chargers had a clear identity switch with Jim Harbaugh at the helm as the new head coach. Despite having Justin Herbert as their starting quarterback, the team focused on Harbaugh’s specialties, defense, and running game to reach the playoffs in his first year with the Chargers. However, to maximize the talent Herbert possesses, the organization has made a clear effort to diversify its roster.

In the offseason, that meant adding wide receiver depth, both through free agency and the NFL Draft. However, their roster movement over the summer might not be over just yet, as rumors connecting them to a reunion with Keenan Allen continue to make the rounds. With Ladd McConkey essentially replacing Allen on the roster, he gave his unfiltered thoughts going into his sophomore season in Los Angeles.

Is Ladd McConkey On Board With the Chargers Reuniting With Keenan Allen?

Last season, no one expected McConkey to end up having a historically great rookie season. Drafted in the second round, the Chargers clearly had high expectations for him. But he shattered every expectation over the course of the season.

Leading the team in receiving yards, he finished with 82 receptions, 1,149 yards, and seven touchdowns. However, what made his season all the more special was his performance in the postseason. Even though LA lost brutally to the Houston Texans, McConkey set the single-game playoff record for a rookie with an astounding 197 yards in the game.

Going into Year 2, the franchise has to hope for another leap from the youngster as they continue their march to building a Super Bowl contender. But the Chargers might try to bring Allen back into the mix to add some insurance to their pass-catching group.

A franchise legend, Allen spent over a decade with the Chargers, tallying over 10,000 yards in that timeframe. A perennial Pro Bowl threat, he earned six selections and over 1,000 yards in each of those seasons.

After a one-year run with the Chicago Bears, he might be on his way back to Los Angeles. Rather than fear the competition, McConkey seemed thrilled at the idea of bringing an icon of the Chargers back into the mix.

Speaking on the “Up & Adams Show,” his respect for Allen was clear to see: “Keenan’s one of the best to ever to do it. Watching his routes, just from practice film a couple of years ago, you’re like, ‘This guy’s got it.'” As a result, he was fully on board with the veteran rejoining the team.

“As Coach Harbaugh says, ‘Competitors welcome, always welcome.'” That is the mentality that McConkey is also keeping if Allen is indeed on his way back to the Chargers.

After finishing 17th on PFSN’s Offense+ metric last season, he could give the team a significant boost in that department.

His presence could also open up the field better for the rest of the wide receiving group, allowing them to flourish.
