Najee Harris joined the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason, signing a one-year, $5.25 million fully guaranteed contract that has incentives that could bring the total value to $9.25 million. The 24th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft had spent the first four seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He has been among the most consistent running backs in the NFL, recording 4,312 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 1,097 carries, finishing with at least 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in each of his four seasons. Harris has added 1,149 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 180 receptions.
The one-time Pro Bowler has also been a pillar of good health as he has appeared in all 68 regular season games and each of the Steelers three postseason games over that span. While he has not sustained an injury on the football, an off-field incident has landed him on the non-football injury list. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh recently provided a concerning update on Harris.
Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh Shares An Update on RB Najee Harris
Harris suffered an eye injury during a 4th of July fireworks mishap, where several people were injured, and his friend lost multiple fingers. While the Chargers running back has reportedly been at the facility, he was placed on the non-football injury list. Harbaugh provided a not-so-great update while speaking with the media on Tuesday, revealing that the one-time Pro Bowler could miss the entire training camp. Kris Rhim of ESPN shared his comments, posting:
“Jim Harbaugh said Najee Harris is healing and doing everything he can to get back on the field. Harbaugh said he doesn’t know if Harris will be back for training camp”

Harris has reportedly been participating in meetings, however, it remains unclear when he will be able to get back on the field. The Chargers medical staff has not taken a look at him yet as he has been meeting with doctors at Stanford.
While the extent of the injury is unknown, his agent did provide a positive update last week. Doug Hendrickson, who represents Harris, labeled the injury as “superficial” while adding that his client is expected to be ready for the beginning of the season. Los Angeles’ rushing attack ranked just 17th last season, and their top-two rushers, J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, are no longer with the team.
