Who Else Has Faced Hugh Freeze’s Disciplinary Heat Alongside DL Antonio Coleman This Offseason?

Auburn DL Antonio Coleman is the latest Tiger suspended by Hugh Freeze, joining other teammates in an offseason full of discipline.

The Auburn Tigers are gearing up for a critical 2025 season, but head coach Hugh Freeze has spent much of the offseason addressing off-field issues instead of just preparing for the SEC grind.

Freshman defensive lineman Antonio Coleman became the latest Tiger to face disciplinary action, suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Antonio Coleman: Auburn’s Latest Suspension

Coleman’s suspension marks the third major disciplinary case Freeze has had to navigate this offseason, raising questions about team culture and depth heading into September.

Coleman, a 6’1″, 256-pound defensive tackle, enrolled at Auburn in January after a highly publicized recruitment that featured multiple twists and turns. Rated the No. 182 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class and the No. 19 defensive lineman, Coleman was expected to provide early depth in the trenches.

Originally recruited as a defensive end, Coleman shifted to the interior during preseason camp, where his agility and run-stopping ability made him a promising asset. In high school, he tallied at least 13 tackles for loss in three straight seasons, peaking with 22.5 tackles for loss as a junior.

Now, his Auburn debut is on hold. Freeze declined to provide details, saying only that Coleman’s suspension is for a violation of team rules, leaving the timeline for his return uncertain.

D.J. Barber: Dismissed After Felony Arrest

Coleman’s situation is not isolated. He follows former Auburn linebacker D.J. Barber, who was dismissed from the team in July.

Barber, who enrolled in January 2024 and saw his first action as a true freshman against Alabama A&M last August, was arrested on a felony marijuana charge this summer. The arrest ended his Auburn career before it ever truly began, stripping the Tigers of depth at the linebacker position.

Barber’s dismissal was an early reminder that Freeze’s discipline-first approach would not waver, even for first-year players expected to contribute.

Hollis Davidson: Suspended Tight End

The Tigers also dealt with the suspension of tight end Hollis Davidson earlier this month, also for a marijuana-related arrest. Davidson, a fluid receiving threat who joined the team in January, has since returned to practice. However, he remains ineligible to suit up on game days until cleared by Freeze and Auburn’s compliance staff.

Davidson’s absence leaves the tight-end group thinner heading into fall, though his eventual reinstatement could soften the blow if he stays on track.

Hugh Freeze’s No-Nonsense Approach

Freeze made headlines upon arriving at Auburn for emphasizing discipline and accountability, and this offseason has put that philosophy to the test. With three freshmen all facing disciplinary action, Freeze’s message is clear: off-field issues will be handled firmly, no matter how talented the player.

For Auburn, the disciplinary setbacks come at a time when the program is trying to build depth across multiple positions. Losing Barber outright, waiting on Davidson’s clearance, and now suspending Coleman indefinitely could all impact rotations early in the season.

Still, Freeze has reiterated that Auburn’s focus remains on establishing a culture built on responsibility and resilience. If Coleman and Davidson can return to form, and the rest of the roster avoids further distractions, the Tigers may be able to turn this offseason turbulence into a rallying point once the season kicks off.
