Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell was visibly furious during the Cyclones’ Week 0 clash against Kansas State after a controversial referee decision in the second quarter.
With the score tied 7-7 and both defenses forcing turnovers early, officials penalized Iowa State because a linebacker allegedly made “symbols that simulated the beginning of the snap.”

The unusual call immediately drew the ire of Campbell, who stormed the sideline in protest.
Known as one of the Big 12’s most passionate leaders, Campbell’s frustration was clear as he felt the penalty swung momentum in a defensive battle marked by multiple fumbles.

This isn’t the first time Campbell has shown fire on the sidelines, but his intensity underscores how much is at stake.
Campbell’s Legacy at Iowa State
Campbell’s passion is matched only by his track record. Now in his 10th season in Ames, he became the winningest coach in Iowa State history with a 64-51 record, surpassing Dan McCarney in 2024, prior to today’s game against Kansas State. His 55.7% winning percentage is the best in program history, and no other Cyclone coach has more Big 12 victories (45).
National recognition has followed. Campbell is a three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year (2017, 2018, 2020), and his tenure has turned Iowa State into a program that expects postseason football. The Cyclones have posted winning records in seven of the last eight years, with bowl berths in five straight seasons from 2017–21.
The Rise of the Cyclones
The 2024 season marked a turning point for the program. Iowa State finished with an 11-3 record, the first double-digit win campaign in its 133-year history. The Cyclones tied for first place in the Big 12 regular season standings, reached their second-ever conference championship game, and capped the year with a Pop-Tarts Bowl win over No. 15 Miami.
That run lifted Iowa State into the national spotlight, as the team climbed as high as No. 9 in the AP Poll and appeared in the Top 20 of the College Football Playoff Rankings for six weeks. Under Campbell, the Cyclones have appeared in the AP Top 25 in six of the last seven seasons, cementing their place as a Big 12 contender.
Already the winningest coach in Iowa State history with a current 64-51 record, Campbell has built a reputation on toughness, and Saturday’s outburst was another reminder of his relentless drive.

Campbell clearly wasn’t a fan of the referee’s decision against Kansas State. His fiery reaction served as a reminder of both the intensity of Big 12 football and the stakes surrounding every call in a close game.
With a slippery field and sloppy football to open the season, both coaching staffs have shown frustration with mistakes in this clash between Big 12 foes.
