Vanderbilt Predicted to Land 6,438-Yard Transfer Portal QB to Replace Diego Pavia

Vanderbilt is projected to land a proven 6,438-yard transfer portal quarterback as a potential replacement for Diego Pavia.

Diego Pavia changed the trajectory of Vanderbilt football. But when the clock hits zero against Iowa at the ReliaQuest Bowl, his historic collegiate career will come to an end. Now, Head Coach Clark Lea faces the most consequential decision of the program’s modern era: finding the next quarterback to keep the Commodores from slipping back into obscurity.

Vanderbilt Projected to Pursue East Carolina QB Katin Houser

Pavia did not just play the position; he defined it. As the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and a second-team Associated Press All-American, he led Vanderbilt to 10 wins and its most successful two-year stretch in history. Lea wants to build on that momentum and chase an SEC championship, but the roster needs a quick reload rather than a long rebuild.

According to PFSN writer Joe Broback, the answer might be waiting in the transfer portal. Broback suggests former East Carolina quarterback Katin Houser could be the perfect fit for the next phase of the offense.

“Clark Lea has elevated the Vanderbilt Commodores, with Diego Pavia’s presence as a key factor,” Broback stated. “Pavia, the Heisman runner-up, guided the team to unprecedented heights, making the search for his successor critical. While Houser may not be a conventional fit, his arm strength could diversify the offense.”

“Lea and his staff have continually found players who outperform expectations, and Houser has the potential to provide Vanderbilt with a vertical passing element that Pavia did not offer.”

While Pavia dazzled with his creativity, he had limitations as a pure passer. His arm strength was average at best, meaning short throws worked, but deep balls often sailed or lost velocity. That flutter allowed defenders to camp under the ball and disrupt the vertical game.

Houser represents a significant stylistic shift. He is not a scrambler, averaging just 1.9 yards per rush, so his arrival would put the ground game squarely on the running backs. However, that trade-off comes with upside in the air.

Through effective play-action, Houser has demonstrated his ability to find targets downfield and exploit vertical coverage in ways the current offense cannot. The transfer ranked 38th in PFSN’s QB Impact metric while steering East Carolina to an 8-4 record and a Military Bowl berth.

Pavia set the standard. Now, the choice to pursue a passer like Houser will determine if the Commodores can maintain their new status. If the pivot to a vertical passing attack works, Vanderbilt could find itself contending for a College Football Playoff spot in 2026.
