Since North Carolina hired Bill Belichick as head coach, he has aimed to run the Tar Heels football program like an NFL franchise, applying the same strategies he used with the New England Patriots.
While this approach may look promising on paper, some are questioning its effectiveness due to the differences between college and professional football, as well as the significant roster turnover the team experienced this offseason.
Analyst Questions Bill Belichick’s ‘Patriots Way’ Approach at North Carolina
Bill Belichick became known for the ‘Patriot Way’ during his time as head coach of the New England Patriots. The ‘Patriot Way’ is built on discipline, accountability, and unselfishness, qualities that defined every team he led. This approach helped him guide the organization to six Super Bowl championships.
The legendary head coach reportedly brought similar discipline to the Tar Heels during his first offseason leading the team.
However, college football differs from the NFL due to constant roster turnover caused by NIL and the transfer portal. Belichick faced this challenge firsthand, as North Carolina added 70 new players from 2024 to 2025, including 41 transfers.
On ESPN’s “CFB Live,” analyst Tom Luginbill questioned Belichick’s ability to build that culture with so many new faces in the program.
“How do you establish a culture with 70 new players, when you’re essentially holding open tryouts during fall camp?” Luginbill said. “I think it’s going to be fascinating to watch the construction of this roster.”
Luginbill wasn’t the only one questioning Belichick’s plan to bring the ‘Patriot Way’ to North Carolina. His cohost, Sam Acho, also sees challenges ahead.
Acho explained that while it’s positive that the Tar Heels are learning from the Patriots, the ‘Patriot Way’ may be hard to apply at the college level. He pointed out that North Carolina lacks a quarterback and leader like Tom Brady, who could help connect Belichick’s vision with the rest of the team.
“Gio Lopez, he says, ‘Hey, we’re watching Patriots film.’ I get it that might have worked with Tom Brady, but Tom Brady’s not on this roster,” Acho said. “So my questions really are: Will the ‘Patriot Way’ be able to permeate and translate to college football?”

The two analysts’ argument is fair, as many coaches have expressed concern about building a consistent culture in today’s college football landscape, where player turnover is constant. It’s one of the main reasons legendary coach Nick Saban retired, and it continues to be a significant issue in the sport.
Belichick is one of the greatest coaches in football history, and while he might be capable of breaking the mold, it will be an uphill battle. If a player dislikes his style, nothing stops them from entering the transfer portal.
Whether Belichick can successfully bring his New England culture to Chapel Hill remains to be seen, but his transition from the pros to college football will be one of the most intriguing storylines to follow.
