Lane Kiffin wants to cleanse his messy Ole Miss exit. But what began as a glossy Vanity Fair cover story intended to rebrand his move to LSU has instead ignited a firestorm of criticism. Now, former Heisman winner Cam Newton has weighed in.
Cam Newton Rips Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Exit and LSU Move
Cam Newton took to his “4th & 1” podcast to address Kiffin’s recent attempts to frame his Ole Miss departure as a result of cultural hurdles and administrative resistance.
He said, “I see what Lane Kiffin trying to do… He’s trying to disrupt. He’s trying to distract. And most importantly, he trying to deflect from what he deemed he knew, and knows that was uncalled for, how his last days in Oxford was.”
After leading Ole Miss to a historic 11-1 regular season, Kiffin accepted a $91 million contract from LSU. The move was a total abandonment. So, Kiffin attempted to pivot the blame, suggesting that the segregated feel of recruiting in Oxford and the lack of a big city atmosphere made the LSU jump inevitable.
But Newton isn’t buying the claim. He added, “But what you also did in your exit in Oxford, brother, is show what we’ve seen before, brother. Oh, I forgot to name this SEC team that you were once a part of, brother. Knoxville, Tennessee, brother. Not a lot of us in Tennessee.”
Talking specifically about the controversial exit, Newton clarified, “But Lane, you left like a thief in the night… And you was trying to probe. You was trying to get some insider trading. You was trying to have your cake and eat it too in Oxford. And you knew going into Oxford that that’s what it was in Oxford.”
The specific claim about the recruiting hurdles also doesn’t hold. Kiffin’s 2025 Ole Miss recruiting class was ranked 16th according to 247Sports, his highest in Oxford. In addition, his 2025 transfer portal class was ranked fourth, and the transfer portal is where he built his rosters, eventually getting the moniker “Portal King.”
So, Newton threw the last punch and declared, “And it wasn’t like he wasn’t getting no recruits in Oxford because it couldn’t have been that crazy in Oxford because you had the top recruiting class in Oxford. “
The tension has already reached its zenith. It won’t be a stretch to assume that every calendar in Mississippi has a circle around the date LSU visits Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It might be billed as the most toxic homecoming in SEC history.
