Texas 2026 Commit Draws Comparisons With Derrick Henry and NFL Legend as Steve Sarkisian’s Plan Comes to Fruition

Texas lands 2026 5-star RB Derrek Cooper, drawing NFL comparisons as Steve Sarkisian continues his streak of producing elite, 1,000-yard backs.

The college football recruiting world took notice when five-star running back Derrek Cooper chose Texas on July 20. But it wasn’t just the commitment that had scouts buzzing — it was the immediate comparisons to NFL legends like Derrick Henry and Eric Dickerson.

At 6’1″ and 200 pounds, Cooper represents the kind of rare physical talent that could reshape the Longhorns’ backfield for years to come.

Why Are Scouts Comparing 2026 Texas RB Recruit Derrek Cooper to NFL Legends?

Derrek Cooper brings a rare physical profile that has already sparked comparisons to NFL legends, including Derrick Henry, Eric Dickerson, and even Adrian Peterson. His blend of speed, power, and on-field awareness has set off waves not just in Austin but across the national recruiting landscape.

The versatile back from Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Florida, posted 905 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 124 carries as a junior. He was instrumental in leading his team to a Florida Class 1A state championship, displaying dominance on both sides of the ball.

Analyst RJ Young, in a recent video segment, broke down Cooper’s impact, noting, “It’s not the 9.3 yards per carry average that I thought was just gay on like 105 touches, had like 900 yards rushing.”

He continued, “It’s that the dude had 46 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four pass breakouts, four sacks, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles while playing special teams blocking punts.”

Young also emphasized Cooper’s versatility. “If you go watch old Eric Dickerson highlight tape, you’ll see an upright running style… a man that can run by people.” He later added, “I look at him and I go, ‘Oh, what if Derrick Henry was smaller?'”

The rare combination of physical dominance and breakaway speed is what has placed Cooper in these elite conversations. Young continued, “They can’t put their hands on him. That is the kind of speed and size and power that you should be recruiting at the University of Texas.”

How Does Steve Sarkisian’s Track Record Support Cooper’s Development?

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has built a reputation for developing elite running backs, and Cooper appears to be next in line for that treatment. The Longhorns’ rushing attack has consistently produced 1,000-yard backs under his guidance.

“That’s what I do. We run… but what I do is produce thousand-yard backs,” Sarkisian has said, according to Young.

His impressive track record includes stars like Najee Harris, Bijan Robinson, and Jonathan Brooks. Even third-string running back Tre Wisner contributed to the program’s consistent output.

This development system gives Cooper the perfect environment to maximize his potential. The 6’1″, 200-pound back, ranked No. 29 nationally in the 2026 class per 247Sports, represents precisely the type of elite talent Sarkisian has successfully molded in the past.

Cooper’s commitment followed a significant week for Texas, which included securing five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and flipping four-star linebacker James Johnson from Georgia. This recruiting momentum signals the Longhorns’ aggressive approach to building championship-caliber talent across all position groups.
