TCU QB Josh Hoover Makes Monumental Announcement About His Football Future

TCU QB Josh Hoover indicated on Thursday that he's leaving the Horned Frogs and heading into the transfer portal.

With the 8-4 TCU Horned Frogs headed to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, on Dec. 30, where they will play the No. 16-ranked USC Trojans, the team had hoped that its starting quarterback would be along for the fun.

However, that is unlikely to happen, as the Horned Frogs’ QB1 is expected to seek a change.

What Is TCU QB Josh Hoover Planning To Do?

According to a report from ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, TCU quarterback Josh Hoover is headed to the transfer portal. Hoover will also not play in the Alamo Bowl.

Thamel posted the following on X on Thursday: “NEWS: TCU quarterback Josh Hoover intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he tells ESPN. He projects to have the most passing yards, 9,629, and touchdown passes 71 of any quarterback in the sport expected to return in 2026.”

While this news originated from Thamel, Hoover himself took to social media and posted a message to the Horned Frogs’ football team and their fans. Thamel shared Hoover’s post online as well.

“First, I want to thank God for the opportunities that he has blessed me with to play this game,” Hoover wrote. “I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to represent TCU for an incredible 4 years. It has been a dream to be able to play and graduate from this university, and I will be forever grateful for that.”

Hoover went on to thank TCU head coach Sonny Dykes and former associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach Kendal Briles. Briles has moved on to coach at South Carolina. Hoover indicated that he’d “prayed about this” and confirmed in his message that he’s headed to the transfer portal.

According to the PFSN CFB QB Impact metrics, Hoover has an impact score of 86.0 and grades out to a B. This season for TCU, Hoover threw for 3,472 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. In his career with the Horned Frogs, Hoover threw for 9,629 career yards, 71 touchdown passes, and 33 interceptions.

Hoover also boasts a career passing completion percentage of 65.2%, which is a respectable number in today’s college football world.

It’s not known at this time which college program Hoover might want to play for next season. Yet whichever team Hoover goes to in 2026, he’ll bring with him a wealth of experience from his time at the Fort Worth, Texas, college. Now, Hoover fans and TCU onlookers will be watching to see where Hoover lands after going into the transfer portal.
