‘You Have to Pitch the Future’ — Syracuse HC Fran Brown’s Recruiting Strategy Thrives Despite Brutal 2025 Schedule

Syracuse HC Fran Brown continues to dominate the recruiting trail in 2025 even as the Orange face one of the toughest schedules.

Syracuse Orange enters the 2025 season facing one of the toughest schedules in college football. At the heart of the program’s response to this challenge is head coach Fran Brown, whose relationship-driven recruiting approach is drawing national attention.

With top-tier targets like Florida DB C.J. Hester and firm commitments like Jarius Rogers, Syracuse lays the foundation for long-term success.

HC Fran Brown’s Recruiting Shines Amid Syracuse’s Tough 2025 Slate

After being appointed Syracuse’s 31st HC in late 2023, Brown quickly made recruiting a major program strength.

By 2024, the Orange were 36th in national recruiting rankings, impressive for a team battling for relevance in the ACC. That upward trend continued into 2025, keeping Syracuse in the national top 40.

In a recent episode of “Locked on Syracuse,” analysts Brian Smith and Jackson Holzer discussed how Syracuse has managed to maintain strong recruiting momentum despite the challenges of a demanding 2025 schedule. They also offered their perspective on how the program can continue attracting top-tier talent.

“Do you understand that when you’re committing to Syracuse, it might not be the greatest 2025 season? But here’s the good news, Kamron Wilson, Jarius Rodger, you’re not coming here until 2026 anyway. So, what difference does it make to you? The point is that as long as I’m here, and the coaching staff is here, and your position coaches are here, if you trust us, we can develop you and be a really good team,” Holzer said.

Smith continued, “I think that’s a fair statement. You have to pitch the future to guys, whether they’re committed or they’re close.”

Brown’s recruiting fire hasn’t cooled even with a punishing 2025 schedule. Syracuse football’s 2026 class is one of its highest-rated in years, already featuring standout talents like:

  • RB, D’Antae Sheffey, committed April 20, 2024
  • CB, Jaxson Gates, committed Nov. 24, 2024
  • LB, Maurice Medley, committed Dec. 2, 2024
  • OT, Javeion Cooper, committed Dec. 10, 2024
  • WR, BJ Garrett, committed Jan. 10
  • OL, Jojo White, committed Jan. 12
  • WR, Phoenix Henriquez, committed Jan. 15
  • OL, Steven Pickard Jr., committed Jan. 25
  • Edge Rusher, Jarius Rodgers, committed Jan. 27
  • Safety, E’Shawn Sutton, committed March 31
  • WR, Darnell Stokes Jr., committed March 22
  • QB, Zaid Lott, committed March 25
  • DL, Kamron Wilson, committed March 30
  • OL, Shemaj Henry, committed May 3
  • WR, Amare Gough, committed May 10
  • OT Brayden Charney, committed June 9
  • LB, Gemaus Sackie, committed June 15
  • Punter, Jimmy Gregg, committed June 16
  • DL, Kordae Houston, committed June 16
  • WR/DB, Zikhere Leaks, committed June 17
  • QB, Tyrell Grant Jr., committed June 18

Following a successful 2024 season, Syracuse faces a harder test in 2025. The Orange are projected to have the most challenging schedule in the ACC and one of the toughest in the entire FBS.

The challenge begins immediately, as Syracuse opens the season on August 30 against Tennessee in Atlanta. The early slate includes home games against UConn and Colgate before ACC play gets underway with a matchup at Clemson.

The road doesn’t get easier, with trips to SMU, Georgia Tech, Miami, and a regular-season finale at Notre Dame. Meanwhile, the Orange will host Duke, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, and Boston College at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Coach Brown and his team will be tested early and often in what promises to be a defining season.
