How Sherrone Moore and Bryce Underwood Built Their Championship Bond

The base of their relationship runs much deeper than typical recruiting efforts. Moore explained how their connection began years before Underwood became a famous name.
“Yeah, I mean really I’ve known him since he was like 15 or 16 years old for a long time since recruiting the state and being around him. So, there’s been a relationship there,” Moore said during a recent interview.

This wasn’t just casual contact. Moore had been watching Underwood develop through Michigan’s recruiting network, building good connections within the state’s football community.

The relationship reached a turning point during a private meeting in Moore’s office. He described the conversation that sealed Underwood’s commitment to Michigan.

“And I just remember sitting in my office. It was just me and him and asking about what he wanted to do and where he wanted to be. And him telling me like he’s always wanted to come to Michigan. You know, he has pictures of himself as a young boy playing for the Michigan Wolverines,” Moore noted.

This conversation showed that recruiters or NIL deals didn’t manufacture Underwood’s interest in Michigan. Instead, it represented a childhood dream finally becoming reality.

Moore said that family support played a significant role in the decision. “And that was something he’s always wanted to do. His family’s always wanted him here. So, it was just building that back up and making sure they understood that we want him here as well,” he said.

Underwood arrives in Ann Arbor with impressive numbers. During his high school career, he compiled a 50-4 record while throwing over 11,000 yards and passing 152 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4 quarterback led his team to two state championships.

“He’s incredibly smart. The way Bryce approaches football is remarkable, he’s always the first to arrive and the last to leave,” said Ron Bellamy.

Moore concluded by describing how natural the recruitment became once both sides recognized their mutual interest. “So, it was just an easy, easy fix, easy thing to do,” he noted.

The longtime relationship between Moore and Underwood proves that personal connections still matter most in modern recruiting.
