South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers is coming off quite an impressive freshman season. Sellers put up highlight-reel numbers en route to being named SEC Freshman of the Year.
As a redshirt freshman, Sellers threw for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He finished with a 151.9 passing efficiency rating. Sellers completed 196 of 299 passing attempts, a 65.6% completion rate.
For South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, he has nothing but praise for his starting quarterback entering the 2025 season.
What Is Shane Beamer Saying About LaNorris Sellers?
Beamer stopped by for an appearance on ESPN’s “Vibe Check” and spoke at length about what Sellers brings to the Gamecocks.
“Just who he is, his humility, his consistency,” Beamer said. “You know, let’s face it, his life has changed on and off the field since last season at this time. And I’m really proud of LaNorris and how he’s handled that. He’s the same guy that he was last season, at least in our facility.
“Things around him have certainly changed,” Beamer said. “But then just his work ethic. He came back and he’s still a young quarterback. He’s only been a starting quarterback in college football for one season and this is only his third year of being in college.”
Beamer pointed out that he and the South Carolina coaching staff need to understand that Sellers is still young. Beamer also said that Sellers has worked hard to improve on some things “from a fundamental standpoint.” Sellers appears to know what he needs to work on going back to last season.
“Just the fact that he’s a fierce competitor,” Beamer said. “He wants to win at everything he does. It’s cool seeing him out at practice and go back and forth with the defense. Getting mad at me when I take him out and put another quarterback in to get that quarterback experience, especially if it’s a competitive period where we’re keeping score against the defense.
“He’s a fierce competitor, you see that on the field, and knowing that and the kind of person that he is, gives us great confidence going into the season,” Beamer said.
The Gamecocks finished 9-4 in the 2024 season, 5-3 in SEC play. If Sellers can put together a stellar season once again, then Beamer can hopefully get his team into another bowl game.
