This commitment represents a crucial turning point for Texas after losing several high-profile targets. The Longhorns had watched five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo choose Texas Tech and four-star linebacker Brayden Rouse pick Tennessee. Matthews broke that painful cycle.
What Role Did Mark Orphey Play in Landing Matthews?
Cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey emerged as the key figure in securing Matthews’ commitment. The relationship wasn’t new, either. Orphey had previously recruited Matthews during his time at Rutgers, giving him a head start in building trust.
Matthews specifically praised Orphey’s influence, stating he was key to Texas getting involved in his recruitment. That existing relationship proved invaluable as Texas worked to overcome geographical challenges.
Meanwhile, relationship-building became essential in battling South Carolina’s geographical advantage. Throughout the process, South Carolina emerged as Texas’ primary competition, with Matthews visiting the Gamecocks five times.

Matthews expressed his attraction to Texas early in the recruitment process, telling 247Sports, “I can’t really tell you why I like Texas, I’ve just always liked it. It’s something about them that stands out to me, and of course, watching them in the College Football Playoff this last year, it was nice to see the defense, and the DBs looked good.”
Following his official visit to Texas on June 13, Matthews identified the decisive factors. “What stood out was the players and staff, and how much they all love being around each other,” he said. This sense of unity and championship culture ultimately sealed his commitment to the Longhorns over geographically closer options.

The 4-star prospect ranks as the No. 12 cornerback nationally according to 247Sports and No. 9 by On3. Throughout his high school career at Hough, Matthews showed shutdown ability rather than gaudy statistical numbers.
His high school career totals show 77 tackles across 33 varsity games with four interceptions.
Matthews told Rivals’ Chad Simmons about his decision: “I am happy it is done. I am going into a championship program. Texas is a championship team, and they are building up from what they already are. Texas will continue to win games and produce star athletes, and I want to be a part of it.”
His commitment gives Texas 18 pledges in their 2026 class, strengthening an already solid secondary group that includes 5-star athlete Jermaine Bishop Jr. and 4-star cornerback Hayward Howard Jr.
Matthews projects as a potential early contributor who could compete for playing time immediately upon arrival in Austin.
