How Long Will Sam Horn Be Out With Injury? Medical Experts Suggest Long Lay Off for Missouri QB

Missouri quarterback Sam Horn underwent season-ending surgery after fracturing his tibia on the first play against Central Arkansas.

Sam Horn was supposed to be Missouri’s answer at quarterback after missing all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Instead, his comeback lasted exactly one snap. The Georgia native fractured his tibia on his first play against Central Arkansas, and now Tigers fans are facing another season without their hoped-for starter under center.

How Will Sam Horn’s Season-Ending Injury Impact Missouri’s Championship Hopes?

ESPN’s Pete Thamel delivered the news that confirmed Missouri’s worst fears about their quarterback situation. “Source: #Mizzou QB Sam Horn will miss the rest of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery for a broken leg. Tigers’ quarterback room will remain Beau Pribula-Matt Zollers this season,” one of the insiders tweeted.

The announcement came after Horn underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to repair his fractured tibia. The procedure effectively ended his 2025 campaign before it could truly begin, leaving the Tigers scrambling to adjust their offensive plans.

Horn sustained the fracture on his very first snap of Missouri’s season opener against Central Arkansas on August 28, 2025. During the first quarter, he was tackled low and immediately collapsed to the turf in visible pain, signaling to the sideline that something was seriously wrong.

“You hurt for the young man because last year was taken away from him for a different reason, and now this year he’s gonna have to face another injury,” Eli Drinkwitz said.

Horn left the field on crutches with a full leg cast, never returning to the sideline before halftime. After an MRI on Friday, further examinations confirmed the severity of the injury and the need for immediate surgical intervention.

What Does Horn’s Recovery Timeline Mean for His Future at Missouri?

Days after the injury occurred, head coach Eli Drinkwitz remained optimistic while acknowledging the challenging road ahead. “Sam has an injury that’s going to keep him out for an extended period of time. I’m not going to get into specifics, but he will be out,” Drinkwitz said during his September 2 press conference.

According to surgeons, the healing period for the broken tibia ranges between four and six months post-surgery. The tibia, or shinbone, is the most common long bone to be fractured in contact sports and requires significant force to break.

During the first stage of recovery, the main priorities focus on managing pain and providing support without putting weight on the affected area. Generally, patients can start gradually bearing weight around six to eight weeks after surgery, followed by an extended physical therapy program to regain strength and range of motion.

This injury particularly stings for Horn, who already missed the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. The setback means the Georgia native has appeared in just five games during his Missouri career, despite arriving with high expectations and considerable talent.

With Horn sidelined indefinitely, Penn State transfer Beau Pribula takes over as Missouri’s starting quarterback. Freshman Matt Zollers will serve as the primary backup, giving the Tigers a completely different look under center than they originally planned.

Pribula has started the season impressively, completing 79% of his passes for 617 yards and five touchdowns through two games. His performance offers hope that Missouri can still compete at a high level while Horn focuses on his recovery and potential return in 2026.
