The college football world reacts as four-star defensive back Mekhi Williams officially decommits from Mike Norvell's Florida State.

It seems Mike Norvell and Florida State’s bad luck continues. After a disappointing 5-7 season, the offseason was supposed to turn things around. But now recruiting has gone off the rails too, with the decommitment of a four-star defensive back.

College Football World Reacts to Mekhi Williams Decommitting From Mike Norvell’s Florida State

Mekhi Williams took to his X handle on Sunday and announced the news of his decommitment from Florida State. He wrote, “This decision wasn’t easy, but God has a plan for me and I know this is the best decision for myself. Thank you god for the opportunity and I just wanna thank you in advance!”

“I just wanna thank all the coaches for the opportunity to be a part of your program. After careful consideration, and a long talk with my family, I have decided to decommit and will not be attending Florida State… Thank you Nole nation!”

Reactions on social media were immediate.

247Sports’ Andre Champagne wrote, “Four-star DB Mekhi Williams announced he will decommit from Florida State. Williams just visited Wisconsin and will visit #LSU on June 19 👀 “

Throne Spud’s X handle commented, “Man Mike Norvell really is a dead man walking”

FSU Wire’s Matthew J. Lenix said, “I’ve been prepared for Mekhi Williams to leave FSU for months. Not even surprised”

AYS Sports’ X handle noted, “Mekhi Williams has decommitted from Florida State 👀”

247Sports’ Nick Osen replied, “Top 247 defensive back Mekhi Williams has de committed from FSU

“Was in Madison for OV this weekend”

Williams will take visits to Wisconsin and LSU next, and given special assistant Ed Orgeron’s appointment and Lane Kiffin’s pull, the Tigers could emerge as a top destination. Meanwhile, it will only shake things up with the Florida State fan base.

The Seminoles endured a massive roster overhaul, losing 38 scholarship players to the transfer portal alongside several graduations. High-profile departures included defenders Edwin Joseph and Justin Cryer, as well as top weapons Lawayne McCoy and Randy Pittman Jr.

To counter this attrition, Norvell overhauled his front office, hiring John Garrett as general manager of player personnel, and went to work in the portal. The offense will feature a brand-new quarterback in Ashton Daniels operating behind a heavily portaled offensive line with five projected new starters.

Despite this, for Norvell, the hot seat is warm. He must prove his portal-heavy offensive line can gel under Herb Hand and that his defense can generate a reliable pass rush.
