President Obama Pays Tribute to Curt Cignetti and Indiana Football Following CFP Title Success

President Barack Obama paid tribute to coach Curt Cignetti's national championship-winning Indiana Hoosiers.

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti delivered the No. 1 Hoosiers their first national championship in program history on Monday. The Hoosiers defeated the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes 27-21 in a hard-fought national championship game at Hard Rock Stadium.

The turnaround effected by Cignetti in only two years at the helm of Indiana has left college football stunned after taking over a 3-9 team in 2023 and transforming them into national champions.

Former US President Pays Tribute to Curt Cignetti

The tributes for Cignetti and Indiana continued to pour in, and former President Barack Obama was the latest high-profile figure to pay tribute to the national champions on X.

“Congratulations to Indiana University and Coach Cignetti on winning their first College Football Playoff National Championship. One of the greatest turnarounds of all time,” Barack Obama tweeted.

Cignetti’s national championship win with Indiana has made the Hoosiers one of the Cinderella stories of the modern era, capturing the country’s attention as they romped through opponents this season and cementing his status as one of the best coaches in the country.

Cignetti Signals Paradigm Shift in College Football

The Hoosiers’ college football history can now be categorized into B. C – Before Cignetti and A. C – After Cignetti. Indiana last won a bowl game in 1991 before the charismatic coach arrived in Bloomington, and they are the first first-time national champion in college football in 29 years, signaling a changing of the guard.

While speaking to reporters after the national championship win, Cignetti hailed the new shift in college football and stopped just short of declaring the start of a new dynasty in college football.

“People can cling to an old way of thinking, categorizing teams as this or that or conferences as this or that,” Cignetti said, “or they can adjust to the new world, the shift in the power dynamic in college football today.

“The results speak for themselves. Those are facts. No one can predict the future, but I know we have a huge TV contract, and all the institutions make a lot of money, and they’ll be a lot of good teams next year in the league.”

The Hoosiers are well on their way to becoming a dynasty after Cignetti indicated that he was not interested in departing for the NFL. In addition, Indiana has the No. 2 transfer portal class in the country, signalling the Hoosiers’ intention to remain competitive even after scaling the pinnacle of college football.
