Paul Finebaum Gets Realistic About Arch Manning Hype for the First Time Before the Opener

Paul Finebaum offered a grounded take on Arch Manning’s rising hype ahead of Texas's season-opening top-three matchup against Ohio State.

As the 2025 season approaches, no player in college football is generating more buzz than Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning. The nephew of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning has already become a household name despite throwing just 90 passes and starting only two games in his college career.

The hype surrounding Manning feels almost unprecedented for such limited experience, but even analyst Paul Finebaum recently offered his measured perspective on whether the expectations have grown too intense.

What Does Paul Finebaum Really Think About Arch Manning’s Championship Potential?

On the August 13 episode of “The Paul Finebaum Show,” a caller named Thomas raised an intriguing question that many college football fans are asking.

Why is Texas receiving so much preseason hype when Georgia, which beat the Longhorns twice during the 2024 season, seems to be getting overlooked? Thomas attributed this disparity to what he called “the Arch effect,” while pointing out that Manning remains largely unproven at the college level.

Finebaum’s response struck a balance between acknowledging the excitement and maintaining realistic expectations about Manning’s immediate impact.

“Everybody knows the same amount of information, and everyone’s saying the same thing, including me. But I don’t think inexperience is really the key. It’s how does Arch Manning perform? And I have a high degree of confidence in him. Doesn’t mean he will. It just means that I believe in him,” Finebaum said.

This measured approach reflects Manning’s unique position as he prepares for what could be his breakout season. The path that led him here began long before he set foot on the Texas campus.

How Did Arch Manning Build Such Massive Expectations Before College?

When Manning entered ninth grade at Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans, he already had multiple SEC offers and sky-high expectations waiting for him.

His coaches made deliberate efforts to downplay comparisons to his legendary football family, but his grandfather, Archie, often reminded the media just how advanced Arch appeared compared to his famous uncles at the same age.

The early signs were certainly promising. While Peyton and Eli both played junior varsity as freshmen, Arch opened his varsity career by throwing for 234 yards and three touchdowns in his debut. That performance set the tone for what would become a highly scrutinized high school career.

Manning has become one of the most talked-about names in college football despite throwing under 100 passes at this level. Most of his action during the 2024 season came against lower-tier opponents like Mississippi State and Louisiana-Monroe, rather than powerhouse programs like Georgia or Alabama. This limited sample size makes evaluating his true potential both challenging and fascinating.

So the question remains: can Manning live up to the enormous hype surrounding his name? The fundamental tools certainly appear to be there. He processes information quickly in the pocket, rarely appears rattled under pressure, and his mistakes typically stem from being too aggressive rather than confusion or poor decision-making.

He demonstrates a strong understanding of timing and maintains his composure when facing pressure.

However, there’s definitely room for growth in his game. His ball placement can become inconsistent when throwing on the move, and while he possesses the athleticism to extend plays effectively, refining his mechanics outside the pocket will prove crucial to his continued development.

Can Arch Manning Handle the SEC’s Elite Competition This Season?

The real test begins in 2025, as Texas enters the challenging SEC gauntlet. Facing elite defenses like Georgia and Ohio State will reveal much more about Manning’s capabilities at the highest level of college football. These matchups will provide the first legitimate measuring stick for his development.

What makes Manning’s journey particularly interesting is his patient approach. Unlike many young quarterbacks who feel pressure to rush toward the NFL, he appears to be in no hurry. Thanks to NIL opportunities and a strong support system that includes his father Cooper and uncles Peyton and Eli, Manning has the luxury of developing at his own pace.

Even with Quinn Ewers already established as the starter, Manning’s decision to choose Texas demonstrated his focus on the long-term picture. This approach mirrors Peyton‘s early years at Tennessee, where he waited his turn and ultimately passed on being the number one NFL draft pick to remain for his senior season. Manning could very well follow that same methodical route.

If he plays up to expectations during the 2025 season, he might consider declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft, but such a decision is far from guaranteed. With Texas loaded with talent and young stars like receiver Ryan Wingo returning for additional seasons, there’s no external pressure forcing Manning to rush his timeline.

The program’s championship aspirations align perfectly with his personal development goals, creating an environment where patience could pay significant dividends for both parties.
