Pat McAfee’s Fight With Producers Escalates as Fans Blast ESPN Over ‘Diva’ Allegations

Fans rushed to Pat McAfee's defense after reports surfaced that ESPN producers called him a diva.

When the legendary Lee Corso could no longer participate on “College GameDay” full-time, ESPN needed someone to step up and bring the same kind of energy he did. While no one can truly replace Corso, hiring Pat McAfee has worked well for the network as the former NFL punter has quickly become a fan favorite.

However, while fans love McAfee, not everyone at ESPN reportedly feels the same way. Some producers have allegedly called him a “diva” and claimed he’s publicly criticized members of the GameDay production team. Fans weren’t happy with those accusations and quickly came to McAfee’s defense.

How Did Fans React to ESPN’s ‘Diva’ Accusations Against Pat McAfee?

From an outside perspective, it seems clear that McAfee is well-liked. Fans are drawn to his energy and overall vibe on “College GameDay,” which has helped him build a massive following.

However, in a report from Front Office Sports (FOS), “College GameDay” producers reportedly called McAfee a “diva,” with one anonymous source saying, “Grow up and talk to these people to make it better. You are not a victim,” after McAfee allegedly bashed the show’s producers.

Fans were not pleased with Front Office Sports’ report and quickly took to X to criticize ESPN. One person argued that ESPN needs McAfee far more than he needs the network, saying that without him, “College GameDay” would be a worse product than FOX’s “Big Noon Kickoff.”

“Lol I guarantee you ESPN needs Pat more than Pat needs ESPN,” the fan wrote. “If he leaves College Game Day, it’s over. Big Noon Kickoff wins. (They already have a better product so imagine if ESPN didn’t have Pat)”

Another fan claimed that ESPN’s criticism of McAfee highlights why the network has struggled in recent years, writing, “ESPN is really trying to avoid being relevant.”

One fan pointed to McAfee’s weekly field-goal kicking giveaway on “College GameDay” as proof that he is far from a diva, challenging the network to fire him and watch their ratings plummet.

“The ‘diva’ who gives out 200k of his own money every week to students? ‘Breaking news ESPN exec doesn’t like Pat Mcafee’ what else is new,” the fan wrote. “Fire him and see how good the ratings are.”

One person even went as far as to say McAfee is more important than a producer, writing, “Pat is bigger than some random producers. Good luck with that.”

Another fan challenged ESPN to show the same attitude toward “First Take” host Stephen A. Smith, writing, “Hopefully they have that same energy for Stephen A. Smith.”

People are clearly upset with ESPN producers’ claims, which makes sense given how widely McAfee is liked. However, it’s important to remember that producers are the ones who keep a show like “College GameDay” running.

While these claims could be baseless, the producers’ concerns may also have some validity. McAfee has yet to respond to FOS’s report, and it will be interesting to see if and when he does so.
