Oregon coach Dan Lanning has made a name for himself as one of the most talented coaches in college football since taking the Ducks job in 2021. As the Ducks prepare to face the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers in the Peach Bowl on Friday, Lanning’s wife, Sauphia Lanning, has grabbed the headlines for her inspirational journey after beating cancer.
A Look Into Sauphia Lanning’s Life and Medical Condition
Sauphia was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and has a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from Northwest Missouri State University. Sauphia and Dan Lanning met at an Outback Steakhouse where they both worked in 2005.
The Ducks coach was a linebacker at William Jewell College while Sauphia studied at Northwest Missouri State University. They got married in 2009 and have three sons, Caden, Kniles, and Titan.
In 2016, a tumor was found in Sauphia’s right knee, and she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer.
During an Oct. 12, 2024, “College GameDay” episode, the Oregon coach, who was a linebackers coach for the Memphis Tigers then, revealed how he found out the news about his wife’s diagnosis.
“I was at a coaching retreat, and Sauphia calls me and tells me she has cancer. Nothing really prepares you for that,” Dan Lanning said. “I just kept trying to envision what my life and our kids’ life looked like without Sauphia and just knew that wasn’t an option for us. Made you grow in your faith, you’re on your knees every night praying.
“I was just really grateful for coach Norvell in that situation. I felt like I wanted to be at work, maybe put my mind away and he wouldn’t let me.”
Sauphia had to undergo three months of chemotherapy before surgery to remove the tumor and was finally declared cancer-free in 2017. Last year in May, Sauphia celebrated being eight years cancer-free.
The Ducks have worn uniforms designed by Sauphia, raising awareness on different forms of cancer, and she has continued to be an activist for the condition, while serving on the board of Sarcoma Alliance.
Dan Lanning Continues To Pay Tribute to His Wife
The Oregon coach has repeatedly paid tribute to his wife’s resilience and impact on his career, most famously during his introductory news conference as the Ducks’ coach in 2021. During his news conference before the Peach Bowl, Lanning once again expressed his gratitude to his wife and sons for accompanying him during the College Football Playoff.
“More than anything, how grateful I am to be a part of what I get to be a part of,” Lanning said. “My three boys and my wife got to come on this trip and you try not to be selfish in this profession, but it was pretty fun stepping into that hotel room last night.”
Sauphia and their three sons will be in the stands at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, for Oregon’s Peach Bowl clash against the Hoosiers on Friday evening as the Ducks coach attempts to continue his meteoric rise in college football by leading his team to a national championship game.
