‘For Me, This Is It’ – Oregon’s Dan Lanning Shuts Down NFL Coaching Talk

Dan Lanning shuts down NFL coaching rumors, declaring his full commitment to Oregon with a bold statement regarding his coaching future.

Shifting from a college program to the NFL is a common ambition for many coaches, and it’s not a wrong act. We’ve seen several successful examples of such transitions, like Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh, and more. Even coaches like Bill Belichick, in turn, transitioned to college football after a successful NFL stint.

Most recently, people have talked about Colorado head coach Deion Sanders going to the NFL because he is that successful with the Buffaloes. But the Oregon Ducks head coach, Dan Lanning, has recently made his stance clear that he is not entertaining NFL coaching offers.

Dan Lanning Ends NFL Speculation With Firm Commitment to Oregon

Lanning’s coaching journey with the Oregon Ducks is nothing short of legendary. He took over the program in 2022 and has quickly become one of the most successful coaches in college football.

Under his leadership, the Ducks have posted a 35–6 record, including a perfect 12–0 regular season in 2024 and a Big Ten Championship in their first year in the conference. Every single season since 2022, they have won 10 or more games. Plus, his 35 wins are the most by any Oregon head coach through their first 40 games.

You may already know, but he was even mentioned as a potential replacement when Nick Saban retired from coaching. At that time, there was panic among the people of Eugene because being Saban’s replacement would be a huge promotion for him. But he shut down those rumors and proved his loyalty to the Willamette Valley.

Now he has made his stance crystal clear while speaking with reporter Bri Amaranthus. Reflecting on his journey, Lanning credited Oregon for giving him a chance when others didn’t. “(Oregon) made a commitment to me. They gave me an opportunity here that no one else gave me that opportunity. They gave me a chance to be the head coach here, and that’s something I want to see through,” he said.

It’s not like he never dreamed of coaching NFL teams–if you didn’t dream of such a thing, it might almost be a crime. Jokes aside, Lanning admitted he once dreamed of coaching in the NFL, but his priorities have shifted.

“I used to have dreams and aspirations of coaching in the NFL,” he said. “And then I feel like I’ve fallen in love with really the players that I get to build relationships with here… For me, this is it. This checks every box.”

Lanning continued with a grounded perspective, “I think at some point, if you’re always looking at what’s next, what next, sometimes you miss the opportunity to smell the roses and see what exists right in front of you.”

In his successful run with the Ducks, the only thing missing is a title. Last year, they were pretty close to that, but the semifinal loss to Ohio State cost them badly.

But the thing is, the Ducks are now locked into a winning culture, so expectations are high. And for Lanning, leaving a team that is already in top form would be the most immature decision ever. So, it’s as simple as that–he isn’t going anywhere.
