Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was the talk of college football as he tussled in the courts with the NCAA over his eligibility status for next season. Chambliss was ultimately granted a sixth year of eligibility and will be one of the highest-rated returning quarterbacks in college football next season.
Trinidad Chambliss Receives Russell Wilson Comparisons
On Friday, ESPN’s Jordan Reid pinpointed Chambliss as a potential riser in 2027’s loaded NFL Draft class. The Ole Miss quarterback received high praise from an AFC scout, who compared him to NFL legend Russell Wilson.
“Russell Wilson all over again. The dude is electric. He attacks the middle of the field and puts so much stress on defenses,” the scout said. “Don’t be surprised to see someone take him in the back end of Round 1 if he builds off of last season.”
During his tense eligibility battle with the NCAA in February, Chambliss was regularly tabbed to be the 2026 NFL Draft’s QB2 behind Fernando Mendoza. Despite his potential first-round pick, Chambliss fought to stay in college football for an extra season and was reportedly paid $6 million to return to Oxford.
The 2027 NFL Draft class has long been considered one of the most loaded in recent memory. Alongside Chambliss, Texas Longhorns standout Arch Manning, Oregon Ducks star Dante Moore, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s CJ Carr are all in contention to be first-round picks on draft night next year.
Chambliss joined the Rebels from the Ferris State Bulldogs via the transfer portal and started the 2025 season as QB1 Austin Simmons’ backup. Chambliss took over the Rebels’ starting reins after Simmons got injured in a Week 2 game against the Kentucky Wildcats and solidified his place in coach Lane Kiffin’s high-flying team.
Chambliss led the Rebels to an 11-1 regular-season record before Kiffin’s controversial departure from Oxford. The quarterback was imperious in the Rebels’ maiden College Football Playoff journey, leading new coach Pete Golding’s team past a first-round clash against the Tulane Green Wave and an all-SEC tussle against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.
Even in the Rebels’ narrow 31-27 loss to the Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl, Chambliss was poised as he went 23 of 37 for 277 yards and 1 touchdown.
Last season, Chambliss earned a PFN College QB Impact score of 90.3, the fifth-best in the country. He tallied 3,937 passing yards on 66.1% completion, resulting in 22 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, while adding 527 rushing yards and 8 scores.
