Mississippi States Faces $500,000 in Consequences After Jeff Lebby Puts SEC on Alert

Mississippi State may get hit with a $500K fine after fans storm field following the Bulldogs' upset win over No.12 Arizona State.

Mississippi State’s thrilling victory over a top-15 opponent created an electric atmosphere at Davis Wade Stadium Saturday night in Starkville, but the celebration could come with a hefty price tag.

The moment fans stormed the field in euphoria, they may have triggered an unforgiving SEC policy that puts the university on the hook for a massive fine, turning a dramatic win into a costly consequence.

Why Does Mississippi State Face a $500,000 Penalty?

The issue stems from a wild celebration after Mississippi State defeated No. 12 Arizona State 24-20 on September 6. Following a go-ahead 58-yard touchdown pass from Blake Shapen to Brenen Thompson with just 30 seconds left, thousands of fans poured onto the field when the clock hit triple zeros.

In the chaos, they tore down the goalposts and swarmed Arizona State players and coaches who were still trying to exit.

This on-field rush directly violates a new zero-tolerance policy established by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in May 2025. Unlike the previous system, which included a warning for a first offense, the updated rule mandates an immediate and significant financial penalty for any field-storming incident.

Despite the looming financial hit, Coach Jeff Lebby seemed upbeat and focused on the program’s progress after the game.

“I think it means, again, that we’re trending in the right direction,” Lebby said in his post-game comments, which were shared on social media.

“Again, today was all about going 2-0. Finding a way to be 1-0 today, being 2-0. We’ve got this incredible home stretch that we’re looking at, taking advantage of our situation, being able to be here at Davis Wade in the early months, and man, incredibly excited, and that was the message to the guys.”

He continued, “Incredible win, fun night, so much to learn from and get better from. But man, we’re 2-0 and we’re just getting started.”

If imposed, the $500,000 fine would be one of the largest penalties for on-field misconduct in SEC history, significantly dampening the Bulldogs’ otherwise monumental victory.

Regardless, the 2-0 Bulldogs will put their undefeated record on the line again next Saturday, September 13, against FCS Alcorn State.
