The Aggies kicked off 2025 with authority, rolling past UTSA 42-24Â in their season opener. But beyond the dominant performance, head coach Mike Elko delivered news that could transform their offensive potential.
After months of uncertainty, one of Texas A&M’s most promising freshmen is finally ready to make his mark.
How Will Tiger Riden’s Return Impact the Aggies’ Offense?
Freshman running back Deondrae (Tiger) Riden is medically cleared to play after being sidelined since a summer car accident. The 4-star recruit was ranked as the 15th best high school running back in the country in 2024 at DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas.
Riden’s high school numbers tell the story of a dynamic playmaker. He accumulated 4,034 career rushing yards and 4,265 all-purpose yards, showcasing the versatility that caught the Aggies’ attention. During spring drills, he quickly made his presence felt before the accident derailed his progress.
The timeline of his recovery became clear when TexAgs posted on X that, “Mike Elko said that RB Tiger Riden got in a car accident over the summer and that today is the first day he has been cleared to practice fully.”

What Does Marcel Reed’s Performance Mean for the Ground Game?
Riden’s return comes at the perfect time, especially considering quarterback Marcel Reed’s impressive showing against UTSA. Reed completed 22 of 34 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns while adding eight rushes for 39 yards and a 4.9 yards per carry average.
Elko’s praise for his quarterback was telling. According to TexAgs, Elko said of Reed, “I thought he did a nice job. I thought he was comfortable. I thought he was poised. I thought he delivered some really confident balls across the middle on time.”

With Reed showing poise in the pocket and mobility when needed, adding Riden creates intriguing possibilities. Reed led the Aggies in rushing on Saturday, but as competition intensifies, having a dedicated threat out of the backfield becomes crucial for offensive balance.
The 5’10”, 212-pound freshman brings serious credentials to the table. His senior season featured 1,880 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns, production that signals he could become the Aggies’ primary ball carrier. If Riden returns to full health, Elko suddenly has the pieces for a multi-dimensional offense capable of creating problems for opposing defenses.
