Michigan State Fans Slam Refs Over ‘Garbage’ Call in Michigan Rivalry Game

Michigan State fans erupted online after an offside call wiped out a fumble by Michigan’s Bryce Underwood.

The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry has long been one of the most anticipated showdowns on the college football calendar, known for its share of epic moments and controversies that make the clash even more special.

The so-called “Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy” is being fought for the 117th time this season, with the Wolverines aiming for their 75th win while the Spartans seek win No. 39.

However, this season’s game featured a call criticized by Michigan State fans, who cried foul on social media.

What Was the Call That Angered Michigan State Fans in Its Rivalry Game Against Michigan?

Game officials ruled that Michigan State cornerback Malcolm Bell was offside on a play that caused Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood to fumble the ball at the start of the third quarter.

The referees said Bell was offside before the play, which gave him an edge in tackling Underwood. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay apparently didn’t like the verdict.

“I thought he timed it perfectly just like Todd (Blackledge) did,” he said. “If we look down the line, he does jump early but he’s a little bit off the line and the ball moves right when he gets to the neutral zone. I don’t think he was offside.”

The play in question caused Spartans fans to let everything out on the game officials on X, with one user calling the decision “garbage.”

Another fan chimed in with the discussion and called the play fishy.

Another fan described the call as “bulls**t.”

An X user also appeared to accuse the referees of siding with the Wolverines in the rivalry game.

How Did The Call Affect Michigan State’s Attack?

The play extended Michigan’s drive, leading to a 5-yard touchdown by Josh Haynes. The sequence gave the Wolverines a 17-7 edge at the 11:50 mark of the third quarter.
Michigan made it 24-7 after Haynes scored on another rushing play to the left of Michigan State’s goal. Dominic Zvada kicked the ensuing extra point.
Michigan State finally scored in the fourth to cut the deficit to 11, but Aidan Chiles failed to convert on a two-point attempt.
Bryce Underwood isn’t having a superstar-caliber game for the Wolverines, passing for 86 yards and rushing for 26 yards with a touchdown. Justice Haynes is having a superb game for Michigan with 149 yards and two TDs.
