At the recent Detroit training camp, Bryce Underwood, Michigan’s star quarterback, grabbed headlines for a separate reason. The 17-year-old quarterback made a good impression exercising at the camp after public comments doubting his weight had recently gone viral on social media.
The photos from the QuarterbackUniv camp tell a different story. Underwood was healthy and well-built, and the muscles were visible while throwing passes. The $3 million NIL recruit was geared up for the college football season.
Bryce Underwood Dominates Detroit Workout Session
Underwood silenced his doubters with a commanding performance at Quarterback University in Detroit. The 90-minute session focused on footwork and eye discipline. Alejandro Zúñiga captured the moment perfectly, posting, “Michigan QB Bryce Underwood was putting in the work today with @QuarterbackUniv in Detroit.”

The workout featured a rotation of athletes running through drills, with Michigan’s Fredrick Moore serving as the receiver and catching passes from Underwood. Also participating were Michigan State’s Aidan Chiles and Trae Taylor, a Nebraska commit. Held in Detroit, the event felt like a homecoming for Underwood, a Belleville native.
Born on August 19, 2007, in Detroit, Underwood made an early name for himself at Belleville High School. As a freshman, he threw for 2,888 yards and 39 touchdowns, eventually leading the team to two state titles during his prep career.
The quarterback committed and signed with LSU in January 2024. He then switched his commitment to Michigan in November, after Michigan pursued him hard. Coach Sherrone Moore refers to the quarterback competition as “open.”
He will not name a starter until fall camp gets underway. This type of competition forces each player vying for the position to work hard for their opportunity.
Some people on social media had questions about Underwood’s conditioning in the spring. In some areas of social media, trolls suggested Underwood added weight after signing his NIL deal. The pictures from his latest workouts show those doubters wrong. Underwood shows a lean, muscle-bound build that is spot-on for college football.
I was told, he was fat.

Landing Underwood is like hitting the jackpot for Michigan. He’s the top-performing quarterback in the state and has posted the highest rating among Michigan QBs in recent days. His NIL deal further solidifies both his and the program’s commitment to staying at the top of the college football landscape.
Underwood appears poised to show that Michigan is a legitimate championship contender. With a rare blend of determination and athleticism, he’s a natural talent and a potential game-changer for the Wolverines.
