How Does Marcus Freeman’s Asian Heritage Shape His Coaching Philosophy?

Freeman, entering his fourth full season at Notre Dame, brings a nuanced viewpoint to culture and diversity that sets him apart from many of his peers. The head coach, who boasts Black and Asian heritage, understands both sport and society from a perspective few of his colleagues share.

Among the 136 head coaches in FBS, only three are of Asian descent: Freeman, BYU’s Kalani Sitake, and Hawaii’s Timmy Chang. Freeman proudly represents a small but significant Korean-American athletic culture at college football’s highest level.

“In general,” Freeman said, he has “always embraced” being of mixed race while maintaining “the utmost pride” in both his Black and Korean backgrounds. This pride translated into immediate action when he joined the Notre Dame staff. Freeman said the first thing he did after being hired as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator in January 2021 was contact All-American safety Kyle Hamilton, who shares the same parental dynamic regarding ethnicity.

“I called him and said, ‘Brother! We’re going to go to a Korean restaurant and eat,'” Freeman recalled. His hope extends beyond simple recognition of his diverse background. “I hope they don’t just see me as an African American head coach,” he explained. “(I hope) they see me as the Asian American head coach and embrace that.”

What Role Did Freeman’s Family Background Play in His Development?

Freeman’s multicultural identity stems from his parents’ unique love story. While stationed in South Korea as a United States Air Force member, Freeman’s father, Michael, met Chong, his mother. The family eventually moved to Ohio, where the coach was born at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Toledo.

Growing up, Freeman’s family found inspiration in NFL Hall of Fame wideout Hines Ward, who shared a similar heritage and parent scenario. This connection provided a role model who had successfully navigated the sports world while embracing his Black and Asian-American identity.

Freeman’s experience reflects a growing trend in professional sports. Currently, the NFL features several players of Black/Asian-American heritage, including Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs and offensive lineman Sean Rhyan, Detroit Lions wideout Kalif Raymond, and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Sam Howell, among others.

For Freeman, diversity isn’t just a professional consideration but a daily reality. Whether at work with his team or at home with his family, he lives in a world shaped by multiple cultures. This multicultural experience has defined his story since birth and continues to influence his leadership approach.

Freeman’s unique perspective becomes particularly relevant as Notre Dame prepares for its season opener against Miami, where his diverse background helps him connect with players from various cultural backgrounds who are united under the Fighting Irish banner.
