In four seasons as Notre Dame coach, Marcus Freeman has built an impressive resume with a 43-12 record. This recent success propelled the Fighting Irish to the 2024 College Football Playoff championship, where they lost to Ohio State.
Freeman’s performance has attracted NFL head coaching consideration, especially from the New York Giants. Despite this interest, an analyst expects he will weigh offers but ultimately remain in South Bend next season for another run at the national championship.
Analyst Predicts Marcus Freeman’s 2026 Destination
Although there was some buzz about Marcus Freeman being offered a head coaching job in the NFL, particularly by the Giants, college football analyst Josh Pate expects him to field the NFL offer but stay as Notre Dame’s chief tactician next season.
“I expect Marcus Freeman to listen and I also expect Marcus Freeman to be the head coach at Notre Dame next season,” Pate tweeted.
He responded to Mike Garafolo’s statement on NFL Network that the Fighting Irish coach should be among the Giants’ coaching candidates in college football.
“We’ll focus on the Giants here, Marcus Freeman mentioned as a guy that should be in their coaching search, yes, that is the case,” Garafolo said. “I expect him to be the foremost amongst the college candidates.”
Freeman showed grit and fortitude this season. He helped the Fighting Irish string together 10 straight wins after losing their first two games. The streak was not enough, as the team was left out of the CFP and decided to end the season rather than accept a bowl invite.
His first two full seasons with Notre Dame weren’t too shabby either, as the Ohio State alumnus led the Fighting Irish to a 19-7 record, including wins in the Gator and Sun Bowls.
Coaching the $10.1-billion New York Giants is a daunting task. This year, the four-time Super Bowl champions fired coach Brian Daboll after a 2-8 start to the season. Daboll had been hired four seasons earlier and compiled a 20-40-1 record. His tenure began with promise, guiding the team to a 9-7-1 mark in 2022 that led to a wild-card round win. However, Daboll managed only 11 wins across the next 44 games before being dismissed.
Now, the next head coach faces the pressure to restore playoff contention or risk leading the team to another disappointing season. The Giants’ job offers lucrative rewards, and with Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers, Cam Skatterbo, and Abdul Carter leading the charge next season, plus incoming rookies expected to contribute, the team should contend in the NFC East next year.
