The 2025 Notre Dame season was supposed to start with a statement. Instead, it began with heartbreak. After a long offseason of hype and high expectations, the Fighting Irish left a hostile Hard Rock Stadium with a devastating loss.
For new starting quarterback CJ Carr, it was a brutal welcome to the spotlight, and for head coach Marcus Freeman, it was a painful reminder of how quickly a promising season can be questioned.
How Did Marcus Freeman React to the Tough Season Opener?
The Fighting Irish, now sitting at No. 8, fell to now-No. 5 Miami 27-24 on August 31, after Hurricanes kicker Carter Davis drilled a 47-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining. The loss was a gut punch for Irish supporters who were hoping for a strong start to the year.
At the center of the action was CJ Carr, the redshirt freshman who took over as the team’s leader after Riley Leonard departed for the NFL.
While Carr showed flashes of his potential with 221 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a critical game-tying rushing score in the fourth quarter, a few mistakes, including one interception, reminded him that he is still learning on the job.
After the game, head coach Marcus Freeman didn’t hide his disappointment. He admitted the team was both “frustrated” and “disappointed,” and even joked that his own sleepless nights and loss of appetite mirrored how his players felt.
Marcus Freeman says the Irish are “disappointed” and “frustrated” after losing to Miami.
“Very similar to their head coach.”
Freeman says sleepless nights and loss of appetite after a loss like that is normal. But Notre Dame is very focused on bouncing back vs. Texas A&M.

Despite the difficult outcome, Freeman emphasized that he and the team are already shifting their focus to their upcoming matchup with Texas A&M, determined to regroup quickly.
What Is Notre Dame’s Plan for CJ Carr Moving Forward?
Freeman also shed light on his specific game plan for Carr’s debut. The coaching staff was intentional about protecting the freshman quarterback early on, keeping him out of unnecessarily risky situations.
However, that conservative approach doesn’t mean Carr will be held back for long. Freeman made it clear that the young quarterback has the green light to make big plays, especially when the running game is effective.
Marcus Freeman: Intentional about protecting CJ Carr to start the game. Carr will throw the ball down the field every play if you let him. Firm believer in shots down field are a response to having positive run plays. Carr can run the whole playbook.

“Carr will throw the ball down the field every play if you let him,” Freeman said. “Firm believer in shots downfield are a response to having positive run plays. Carr can run the whole playbook.”
Carr’s talent and leadership are evident, and many view him as a potential game-changer for the Irish program. However, Freeman and his staff understand he will need time to develop, learn to make smart decisions, and minimize costly mistakes.
Notre Dame hopes that Carr can follow in the footsteps of former quarterback Ian Book and grow into a steady, multi-year starter who can elevate the entire program.

With a strong offensive line and skilled running backs supporting him, Carr has the tools to find success. If the opening game was any indication, the Irish will only go as far as their young quarterback can take them.
Now, with the Miami loss behind them, Notre Dame has a chance to bounce back and prove that one difficult defeat won’t define its season. The Irish had an early Week 2 bye week to prepare for their clash with the Aggies.
Now, we’ll have to wait and see if Carr can keep developing. No. 8 Notre Dame hosts No. 16 Texas A&M at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
