‘I Definitely Didn’t Expect’ — Makai Lemon Looks To Silence Character Concerns Before NFL Draft

Former USC wide receiver Makai Lemon distinguished himself as one of the most electric playmakers in the country last season. Lemon is widely projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick in tonight’s 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, having established himself as a premier vertical threat and a lock to be one of the first three wideouts off the board.

Lemon became the talk of the pre-draft process following a viral news conference at the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 27. His slouched posture and intense, nearly silent demeanor during interviews sparked widespread debate among front offices regarding his professional readiness.

Makai Lemon Addresses Viral Combine Interview

While speaking to reporters in Pittsburgh just 24 hours before the draft, Lemon finally clarified his mindset during those intense meetings. He explained that his behavior was a byproduct of being “too locked in” rather than a lack of interest.

“Definitely my main takeaway was, it was a learning experience,” Lemon admitted. “It’s about how to carry myself more professionally. I definitely didn’t expect it to look like that… every time when it comes to ball, I take it so seriously and I just play with so much heart and passion.”

The 2025 Biletnikoff Award winner is in a heated race for the WR1 spot against former Ohio State star Carnell Tate and Arizona State standout Jordyn Tyson. Last season, Lemon led a high-octane USC offense with 1,156 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 79 receptions. He concluded his three-year career on the West Coast as one of Lincoln Riley’s most reliable weapons, finishing with 2,008 career yards and 14 scores.

In his final mock draft, PFSN analyst Cameron Sheath predicted the New York Jets will select Lemon at No. 16 overall. This landing spot would pair Lemon with Garrett Wilson, creating a dynamic duo for quarterback Geno Smith. While some mock drafts have Tate and Tyson going higher, Sheath argues that Lemon’s toughness and elite route-running make him the safest bet for a team looking for an immediate impact starter.

After a sensational season for the Trojans last year, Lemon earned a PFSN College Wide Receiver Impact score of 85.1, Lemon heads into draft night with the hardware to back up his confidence. Whether a team prioritizes his on-field dominance over his eccentric interview style will be one of the primary subplots of the first round.
