Legendary Coach Mack Brown Warns NIL Chaos, Transfers Could Leave CFB Players ‘Homeless’

Mack Brown warns NIL and transfer chaos could leave players "homeless," citing tampering, lack of oversight, and long-term risks to education and mental health.

Hall of Fame coach Mack Brown, known for his national title run at Texas and multiple stints at North Carolina, has emerged as a sharp critic of college football’s current direction.

With concerns mounting over the transfer portal and the unchecked influence of NIL deals, Brown cautions that players could be left “homeless.” He argues the unregulated nature of NIL is warping recruitment.

Legendary Coach Mack Brown Issues Stark Warning on NIL, Transfer Issues

Mack Brown has voiced serious concerns about the state of the sport, citing the unregulated mix of NIL deals and the transfer portal as a growing threat to the game’s integrity and players’ futures.

Speaking on “The Triple Option” alongside Urban Meyer, Mark Ingram II, Rob Stone, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart, Brown didn’t hold back as he described what he sees as a dangerous and unsustainable situation for college athletes.

“The transfer portal and NIL at the same time are a disaster,” Brown said. “That creates tampering.”

He pointed out that when players transfer even once, there’s only a 63 percent chance they graduate, due in part to academic credit issues. Multiple transfers, he warned, almost guarantee a player won’t finish their degree, and without that foundation, their long-term stability is at risk.

“Then he’s not going to have a home,” Brown said. “He’s not going to have boosters that he gets to know… he’s not going to get a job in that community when he gets out.”

Brown expressed deep concern about the long-term effects of front-loaded NIL money.

“I’m really worried about kids making more money in NIL up front than they make when they get through with school,” Brown said. “And then they don’t have a job, then they’re homeless, and then we got mental health issues.”

He criticized the lack of enforceable rules and structure, saying,

“It’s not a rule if everybody can break it and nothing happens. There’s no consequences.”

Brown called for more practical oversight, suggesting that instead of appointing a single figure to handle enforcement, it should be a collaborative effort between Congress, NCAA officials, commissioners, coaches, and athletic directors.

“Let’s get some common sense into these rules,” he said. “Let’s be the mini-NFL because that’s what we are… without guidelines.”

Reflecting on how drastically things have shifted over his career, Brown described how college football once prohibited giving players bagels with cream cheese or helping them eat during breaks.

“Feed these kids,” he said. “What does it matter?”

In his final postgame press conference at North Carolina in December, Brown offered a candid look at how NIL directly affected his program.

“We lost 3-4 recruits at the end this year… because they got paid,” Brown said. “I said I got it. That’s another reason I think it’s a great time for me to get out. This isn’t the game that I signed up for.”

On November 26, Brown was dismissed by UNC after a second stint as head coach. His final year was marked by inconsistency, ending with a 35-30 loss to rival NC State.
