Steven Godfrey Calling USC Boosters ‘Fickle’ Is the Real Threat to Lincoln Riley – Not the Schedule

Steven Godfrey warns that USC's 'fickle' boosters and D'Anton Lynn's departure put Lincoln Riley's job on the line heading into 2026.

USC Trojans coach Lincoln Riley led the program to an improved 9-4 record last season. Riley is entering his fifth season in charge of the Big Ten powerhouse and is under pressure to cash in on the Big Ten’s resurgence in the college football picture that has seen three teams win the last three national championships.

Riley brought in the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in the country, further fueling the optimism around the program ahead of next season.

Yahoo Sports Analyst Details Lincoln Riley’s Job Security Concerns

During Thursday’s segment of the “College Football Enquirer,” Yahoo Sports reporter Steven Godfrey detailed the threat of the fickle USC boosters and former defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn’s departure to Riley’s job security at the program.

“The overseers, the minders, the boosters at USC, they can be fickle. They’re sort of culturally inbred,” Godfrey said. “Making the Lincoln Riley hire was sort of a big deal that they stepped out of the USC lineages and connections. I know there are people there who are just satisfied with the results so far. The thing I go back to is the loss of D’Anton Lynn.

“I think that was a massive piece of the foundation of what he was ramping up to do starting this season that was pulled out unexpectedly. Given the initial defensive performance when he got there and his hesitancy to fire Alex Grinch, losing Lynn when he was grooming all that talent they had brought in, to me, that’s a massive blow.”

After two seasons under Riley, Lynn departed USC for the Penn State Nittany Lions’ defensive coordinator job under coach Matt Campbell. Riley responded by hiring former TCU Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson as his new defensive coordinator.

On3 Analyst Andy Staples Puts Lincoln Riley Firmly in the Hot Seat

During this week’s segment of the “Andy & Ari” podcast, On3 analyst Andy Staples placed Riley in the hot seat of college football after returning his starting quarterback and bringing in the No. 1 recruiting class in the country.

“Win now. We have waited. Now is your chance. Now is the time for various reasons,” Staples said. “We either need to see you winning now because you’ve been building to this or we need to see you winning now because you need to prove to us you can win again. This is the time for Lincoln Riley. Now’s your chance. You need to make the playoff.”

Riley took over the Trojans after a disastrous 4-8 season and has led them to a 35-18 record, but has not registered a double-digit win season since 2022 and is under immense pressure to return USC to elite status in college football.
