Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ fight for an extra year of eligibility played out in the public gallery as the NCAA fought back to deny him the opportunity for a second season in Oxford. Chambliss is one of the best returning quarterbacks in college football, and his added eligibility has vaulted him into the 2026 Heisman Trophy conversation.
Lane Kiffin Throws Subtle Shade at Trinidad Chambliss
On Thursday, LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin seemed to throw shade at Chambliss’ added eligibility by quote-tweeting former NFL standout Dez Bryant on X. Kiffin, who coached Chambliss at Ole Miss last year, further tagged Chambliss’ lawyer, Tom Mars, who helped the Ole Miss quarterback during his legal tussle with the NCAA in his tweet.
“Why not just play another year of college w an injunction?? @TomMarsLaw,” Kiffin tweeted.
Kiffin brought in Chambliss via the transfer portal to back up Austin Simmons last year before the Rebels’ starting quarterback was injured, forcing the backup into the lineup as they blitzed through the SEC. Chambliss fit the Rebels’ offense perfectly and helped lead them to a historic 11-1 regular-season record.
Following that success, Kiffin controversially opted to depart Oxford for Baton Rouge before the College Football Playoff. The Rebels ultimately reached the CFP semifinals under Pete Golding, who was swiftly promoted to permanent head coach following Kiffin’s departure.
Pete Golding Details Dealing With Chambliss Uncertainty
The Rebels offered Chambliss a deal to stay in Oxford even before his eligibility hearing, and the program stood with him throughout the ordeal as they lobbied for his extended stay in college football. During an appearance on the “Always College Football” podcast earlier this week, Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding detailed how the team dealt with the uncertainty surrounding their quarterback before his eligibility was confirmed.
“It was taking a step at a time,” Golding said. “The first piece for us was, all right, we have to retain him because if it does get cleared, I know I want him on my football team. He’s got to make a decision based on if he is going to be eligible, and we’ve got to do a good job from a retention component. Are we going to keep the system the same?
“What are the pieces we’re going to put around him? From a development component, is this quarterback coach going to change? There were a lot of questions there that he needed answers to and his camp needed answers to.”
Under Kiffin, Chambliss earned a PFSN College QB Impact score of 90.3 after registering 3,937 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and three interceptions while adding 527 rushing yards and eight scores for the Rebels last season.
