Kirby Smart’s Georgia Steals Major 4-Star CB From SEC Rival Vanderbilt

Kirby Smart flips top 2026 cornerback from SEC rival Vanderbilt to Georgia, boosting the Bulldogs’ class to No. 4 in national recruiting rankings.

Kirby Smart’s Georgia football program just pulled off a major hijack, flipping four-star cornerback Caden Harris from an SEC rival. Harris, a standout from Haywood High School, was the top recruit in the Vanderbilt Commodores’ 2026 class. But a single visit to Athens changed everything for their rival.

In the meantime, the Georgia Bulldogs have added multiple recruits to the class. Still, Harris remains the most high-profile addition. Since his commitment flip came as a surprise, it has generated a significant buzz in the college football community.

Kirby Smart Flips 4-star CB Caden Harris From Vanderbilt

The 6’1”, 165-pound standout from Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee, announced his decision following an official visit to Athens on June 6. He made his first promise to the Commodores on April 29. This made him the top recruit in their 2026 class. But we are currently living in a situation where no commitment is guaranteed.

The Bulldogs kept in touch and were interested in him even after he committed to the rival school. In the end, Coach Smart won following the official visit. During the trip, the four-star CB met with Coach Smart and the defensive coaches, Donte Williams and Travaris Robinson. He reportedly liked Bulldog’s history of developing players, its defensive plan, and the way the school works as a whole.

“At Georgia, you can win in every aspect. That is what I love the most,” Harris told On3. “The coaches know defense, and they know how to teach great technique. Georgia develops defensive backs… I know they’ll develop me on and off the field, setting me up for life after football.”

He added, “Georgia has great coaches. I love how many coaches are hands-on working with the defensive backs. I like the ability to be critiqued at all times. Coach Kirby is a defensive coach, and what defensive player wouldn’t want to play for a head guy like himself? I’ll be surrounded by elite guys who have the same major goal as me, too.”

Harris is ranked as the No. 11 cornerback and the No. 85 overall player in the 2026 class, according to 247Sports. He was the Commodores’ top recruit and a major part of their 2026 plan. So, losing him is a big setback for the Commodores since Coach Clark Lea is still trying to build the roster.

On the other hand, the Bulldogs are growing stronger. Harris is now the 16th recruit to join their 2026 class, which is ranked No. 4 in the nation. He joins a talented group in their secondary that includes four-star cornerback Justice Fitzpatrick, four-star safety Jordan Smith, and three-star safety Kealan Jones.

It’s still unclear which environment might have been better for him. But for now, Harris believes the Bulldogs give him the best path forward.
