Kirby Smart built a dynasty at Georgia, but now the rest of the SEC is catching up. After years of dominance, the Bulldogs face their biggest test yet: can elite coaching overcome the talent gap when everyone else has elite talent too?
How Will Kirby Smart Handle Georgia’s New Reality in a Loaded SEC?
Over the last four seasons, Georgia rolled to a 53-5 record that includes two national championships. If you look at successful NFL rosters, you will also see a flood of Georgia talent, such as the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX team, who started four Georgia alums on the defense.
For a while, it looked like the Bulldogs would run roughshod over the SEC, bending the conference to their will. Then, the unthinkable happened. Georgia not only lost on recruits, but teams beat them on the field.
However, the program became accustomed to dominance. Now, with the emergence of other rivals within the conference, how will they adjust?
“That SEC Podcast” host Mike Bratton voices his concerns.
“Playing at Tennessee. Florida, away from Athens. I see a couple of losses here,” Bratton said.
“I think Georgia will make the College Football Playoff. I know Kirby says, ‘The SEC championship means something to me.’ Does it? You lost your quarterback, and you may have lost the national championship. It feels like they’re coming back to the pack.”
What Makes This Season Different for Georgia?
From the outside, Bratton’s assertions look like hyperbole. However, he makes a clear and correct point. The SEC improved across the board. Texas advanced to the national championship game. Now, with quarterback Arch Manning under center, they look to wreak havoc.
The Longhorns and Bulldogs teams split two games in 2024-25, one of which included the SEC championship, in which Georgia emerged victorious.
Meanwhile, Alabama, which looks like it is in a similar boat to Georgia, will bring its accustomed big-name talent to the fold. The one difference is that head coach Kalen DeBoer has finally gotten a chance to lay a foundation down.

Beyond the traditional powers, schools like Florida and Auburn, which the Bulldogs play on the road, significantly improved their rosters. For example, Auburn added quarterback Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma and a slew of top recruits on both sides.
Similarly, Florida, with a top-end speed at receiver, will bring Georgia a new wrinkle. On top of that, you cannot forget Ole Miss and Kentucky, who can both cobble together a game plan to win and at least make a bowl game.
Make no mistake, Smart can coach. You can see his touch on the defense. Blending coaching acumen with his own experience as a two-time All-SEC defensive back, Georgia’s defense plays with an aggressiveness that is rooted in talent and schematic knowledge.
With opponents possessing balance and athletes across the board like Georgia, can Smart level the playing field?
