Following a Week 1 victory over FCS Illinois State, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer reflected on his record-setting debut while offering a blunt critique of his own play. The transfer also addressed questions about his high-profile NIL package.
Reports initially suggested Mateer’s move to Norman came with a $3 million agreement, but according to SoonerScoop’s George Stoia, that figure applies only if he competes for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The Sooners view him as a major step forward at quarterback heading into next year, and Mateer himself balanced pride with scrutiny in discussing the performance that opened his career in an OU uniform.
Oklahoma’s John Mateer Clears Up $3M Deal, Reviews Debut
Appearing on the SEC Network, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer discussed both the excitement of his debut and the realities of his highly publicized NIL arrangement.
His transfer into Norman drew national attention when reports of a $3 million deal surfaced. For now, his focus remains on football and adjusting to life as the Sooners’ new leader under center. Mateer said the decision to join Oklahoma felt right “the moment” head coach Brent Venables reached out.
“There’s a lot of different reasons. I mean, you talk about Coach Venable, he’s a, he’s a genius. It’s more on the defensive side of the ball. But I mean, he’s just, he’s a great human and a great coach. So when he called me up, I felt honored to take a call from him.”
He continued, “And then it’s coming closer to home, stay with Coach Arbuckle. There was a lot of factors. I mean, this is big-time ball. That’s what I always dreamed of.”

Even before playing a snap, Mateer earned the respect of teammates by being voted a captain. He called that distinction one of the biggest honors of his young career.
“It was my goal when I came in — get the [Captain’s] ‘C’ on the chest, but it’s just respect and you gotta put the time in each day to get that,” he said.
On his approach as a leader, he added, “As a quarterback, that’s the whole job is to elevate everybody’s play around you.”

His debut against FCS Illinois State proved historic, as Mateer threw for 392 yards, the most ever by a quarterback in an Oklahoma debut. When asked to grade himself, however, he admitted the performance fell short of his own expectations.
“Yeah, I actually got a grade from my quarterback coaches, 88%,” he said. “We won the game, but I went in the locker room a little. I wouldn’t say I was as joyful as you should be when you win a game. Winning games at this level isn’t always easy, but there were some plays. Was being selfish, making the wrong reads, and then I threw a pick.”
At Washington State last season, Mateer showcased his dual-threat abilities with 3,139 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions, while also rushing for 826 yards and 15 scores.
Oklahoma, meanwhile, averaged just 4.81 yards per play in 2024, among the lowest marks in the country. The Sooners now hope Mateer’s leadership and playmaking will elevate an offense badly in need of a spark. That will be tested in Week 2 when the Sooners host the Michigan Wolverines, led by freshman QB Bryce Underwood.
