Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was the last Wolverines coach to bring sustained success to Ann Arbor when he led them to an unbeaten Big Ten and national championship double in 2023. He departed for the Los Angeles Chargers immediately afterward, with a sign-stealing scandal hanging over him and the program.
Jim Harbaugh Details the Unique Key to His Michigan Success
Harbaugh was the Wolverines’ coach for nine seasons before he departed for the NFL after a glorious season in Ann Arbor, and during an interview alongside his brother, John Harbaugh, on Wednesday, he revealed how assistance from the New York Giants coach helped to boost his Michigan career.
“I took his (John Harbaugh) whole defensive system, it was so good,” Harbaugh said. “In 2021, I go, ‘John, I need your defense.’ My brother was like, ‘I got two guys. You should really do the Ravens’ defense.’ He recommended two guys, Mike Macdonald and Jesse Minter. He said, ‘I like Michigan, but I love you.’
“We had a great year in 2021, won the Big Ten and beat Ohio State, go to the CFP. John calls and says, ‘I need Macdonald back.’ As soon as he took Mike back, he’s like, ‘Jesse Minter, over at Vanderbilt, same defense.’ It was seamless. A historic 40-3 using the Ravens’ defense. It’s the best scheme, you aren’t exposed on any big plays.”
In the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, for the first time in the Wolverines’ history, Michigan went winless at home, heralding the worst year of Harbaugh’s tenure. He responded by hiring Mike Macdonald, who was the Baltimore Ravens’ linebackers coach, to become his defensive coordinator at Michigan.
The Wolverines put together an 11-1 regular season, including handing Harbaugh his first win against the Ohio State Buckeyes, a Big Ten title, and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
After the elder Harbaugh recalled Macdonald to Baltimore, the younger Harbaugh hired Vanderbilt defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to the same position at Michigan. The 2022 season was even better, as the Wolverines notched the program’s first 12-win regular season in 117 years. They won the Big Ten and clinched another playoff berth.
Harbaugh finally led the Wolverines to their first national championship since 1997 in 2023, with Minter masterminding one of the meanest defenses in the country. With a combined contract value of $6.6 million, split between Minter and Macdonald, Harbaugh clinched the recipe for success in Ann Arbor.
Minter followed Harbaugh to Los Angeles as the defensive coordinator in 2024 before ironically being named the Ravens’ head coach in January after John Harbaugh was fired after 18 seasons.
On the other hand, after returning to Harbaugh’s Ravens in 2022, Macdonald was named the Seattle Seahawks coach in 2024, and he led them to Super Bowl LX this year, closing out one of the most successful coaching tree interactions of college football and the NFL.
