The transfer portal has officially opened today. For James Franklin and the Virginia Tech Hokies, they’re hitting the ground running in the transfer portal to address the program’s need for a quarterback.
This past season, senior quarterback Kyron Drones struggled to make plays for the Hokies, throwing for only 1,919 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, which was an approach that favored a more conservative offense. A head coach like Franklin, the Hokies program is looking for a quarterback to help lead their new era, and is already being aggressive with the transfer portal.

Why Pribula Could Be A Perfect Fit for Franklin at Virginia Tech
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Missouri Tigers quarterback transfer Beau Pribula has a visit to Virginia Tech planned as he enters the transfer portal today. Pribula just wrapped up his senior season with an 8-5 Missouri team.
Statistically, Pribula posted similar stats to Drones, but he is also a quarterback who was originally part of Franklin’s program with the Nittany Lions. After spending his first two seasons at Penn State, Pribula played his senior year at Virginia Tech before entering the transfer portal to utilize his final year of eligibility.
With only one season as a starter on his resume, Pribula is still raw and has some remaining potential. Drones have been the starter for the Hokies for three consecutive seasons and never seemed to improve.
In fact, his senior season was arguably his worst of three seasons as a starter with career lows in completion percentage and quarterback rating. He also threw the most interceptions in a season with nine.
What Pribula could bring to Virginia Tech is a more accurate passer. In 2025, he completed 67.4 percent of his passes, threw for 1941 yards, and finished in the top 50 in the country in QBR. He isn’t as mobile out of the pocket as Drones, but he is capable of picking up some yards on the ground as well.
It makes total sense why Virginia Tech would set up a visit with him as a potential new quarterback who is already familiar with Franklin’s system as the Hokies enter their new era with him leading the program.
Pribula wasn’t able to receive many snaps during his tenure at Penn State, but in his final year, it wouldn’t hurt if he were going to be a starter, to be in a system he already knows.
