Anthony Colandrea Gets New Weapon As Jamal Rule Rises in Nebraska Ranks

Anthony Colandrea walked into Lincoln needing a reliable backfield threat to balance Nebraska’s revamped passing attack. He found his answer in a true freshman who skipped his high school prom to start grinding in winter conditioning. Jamal Rule just introduced himself to Memorial Stadium with a breakout spring game performance that completely alters the offensive ceiling for Matt Rhule’s squad in 2026.

Greg McElroy Praises Jamal Rule After Nebraska Spring Game

National media members are already taking notice of the freshman’s rapid ascension up the depth chart. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy highlighted Rule’s performance as a massive development for a Nebraska program desperate to contend in an expanded conference.

“Based on what some insiders have been saying, he is essentially the story of the spring before the spring game even happened,” McElroy said on his podcast, “Always College Football,” this week. “To then go out and average 13.2 yards per carry in the spring game has some people pretty excited about it.”

McElroy continued, “It would be a major surprise if he is not in the mix as a guy who factors very heavily into their running back rotation when Nebraska opens the season later this fall.” The former three-star recruit took 10 carries for 119 yards, showcasing breakaway speed on a 75-yard touchdown sprint down the right sideline in the fourth quarter.

“Jamal’s had a really good spring,” Rhule told reporters after the scrimmage. “What he looked like today, he’s looked like that all spring. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast, he’s got home-run ability.”

Colandrea recognized the freshman’s elite potential during the very first week of winter practice. He sees a foundational piece that perfectly complements his downfield passing ability.

“Jamal’s a stud,” Colandrea told reporters following the spring game. “I knew this since the first practice when he broke a long run. When it was Week 1, and he was breaking all these long runs, I was like, ‘Dang, this kid’s legit.'”

The transition from a pure pocket system to a dynamic scheme featuring Colandrea fundamentally alters how opponents must defend the Cornhuskers. Opposing linebackers cannot blindly crash the line of scrimmage on every run read. They have to respect Colandrea’s proven ability to pull the ball and scramble for critical first downs.

The potent combination of Colandrea’s veteran experience and Rule’s sheer explosiveness gives the Cornhuskers a terrifying new dimension heading into the fall.
