Ja’Boree Antoine Gets Honest on Facing Miami’s Darian Mensah Offense

The Miami Hurricanes are currently hosting the most dangerous passing attack in college football on their own practice field. Sophomore cornerback Ja’Boree Antoine finds himself in the middle of the daily crossfire. He views the grueling practice reps against new quarterback Darian Mensah and a loaded receiver room as a developmental tool.

Mensah arrived from Duke after a 2025 campaign where he shredded opposing secondaries. The big-armed quarterback threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns while guiding the Blue Devils to an Atlantic Coast Conference championship and a College Football Playoff berth. He ended the season as the 11th-ranked quarterback, per PFSN CFB QB Impact.

Ja’Boree Antoine Evaluates Battles Against Darian Mensah

“Each day is an iron-sharpens-iron type of day,” Antoine told reporters this Saturday when asked about facing the newly assembled offense.

Mario Cristobal armed his new signal-caller with an array of perimeter weapons. The Hurricanes secured portal commitments from South Carolina speedster Vandrevius Jacobs (32 receptions, 548 yards in 2025) and former West Virginia standout Cam Vaughn (35 receptions, 541 yards in 2025).

They join returning stars like freshman sensation Malachi Toney, who recorded 109 receptions for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Together, they form a track meet on the outside. Mensah loves to throw the deep ball and challenged defenses vertically throughout his time at Duke.

That aggressive mentality alters how the Miami secondary must operate. Quarterbacks who test tight coverage windows force defensive backs to play with discipline. Cornerbacks cannot squat on underneath routes or take false steps against this group. The offense attacks the deepest parts of the field, forcing defensive backs to sprint relentlessly.

Miami signed a talented defensive class last cycle. Cristobal insists on building through the high school ranks while using the portal to fill specific veteran gaps. Antoine represents that homegrown foundational talent. The Hurricanes expect him to develop into a lockdown option capable of shadowing the best receivers in the conference.

The defense is getting an unvarnished look at what opposing teams will feel this fall. It builds resilience for a secondary looking to assert its dominance in the ACC. Cristobal built this roster to win a title now, leveraging a portal haul to harden the Miami defense behind closed doors.
