From Alabama to Columbus: A Fresh Start for Julian Sayin

After transferring from Alabama and competing in a tightly contested quarterback battle in Columbus, Sayin’s poised reaction to being named QB1 has fans buzzing about what’s next for the sophomore.

Sayin’s journey to Ohio State has been anything but ordinary. The California native initially signed with Alabama in December 2023, attending classes in Tuscaloosa before entering the transfer portal in January 2024. Ohio State saw flashes of Sayin’s potential during the 2024 season, where he appeared in four games and logged 27 offensive snaps.

His most memorable moment came with a 55-yard touchdown strike to tight end Bennett Christian against Western Michigan. In limited action, he completed 5-of-12 passes for 84 yards and showed the kind of arm talent that recruiting services had raved about during his high school career.

According to someone close to Sayin, the young quarterback’s demeanor hasn’t changed much since being named the starter. “He’s relaxed, he’s ready, he’s fired up,” the insider shared. “He’s got that cool Cali disposition to him. Doesn’t get too riled up by things, and that helped him manage what proved to be a closer quarterback battle than people expected.”

Veteran transfer Will Howard even praised Sayin’s natural ability, saying he throws “one of the prettiest balls” he’s ever seen. Despite his pedigree as a five-star recruit, Sayin still had to earn the job, which makes his calm confidence stand out even more.

The Alabama Comparison

Sayin’s move from Alabama to Ohio State has naturally set up storylines for the 2025 season. With DeBoer turning to Ty Simpson as the Crimson Tide’s starter, fans and analysts are already circling comparisons between Sayin in Columbus and Simpson in Tuscaloosa.

While those narratives may not be fair to either quarterback, the timing is intriguing: Sayin faces Texas in Week 1, while Simpson leads Alabama against Florida State. Every snap from both quarterbacks will be heavily scrutinized.

Beyond the football field, Sayin has also excelled in the classroom. He earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors in 2024 and is majoring in the sport industry, a balance that reflects his maturity and preparation for life beyond football.

For Ohio State, naming Sayin QB1 isn’t just about this season; it’s a long-term investment. With four years of eligibility remaining, Ohio State could be building its offense around one of the most talented young quarterbacks in the country.

If Sayin’s calm yet fiery behind-the-scenes reaction is any indication, Ohio State fans may be witnessing the beginning of a special era in Columbus.
