Since the inception of the NCAA’s transfer portal and legalized NIL deals, teams from basketball to football have begun hiring general managers to assist with recruiting, among other tasks involved in running a team. For Michigan, one man seems to be turning the Wolverines’ fate: Sean Magee.
While most programs scrambled to adjust to the new era, Michigan’s general manager was already laying the groundwork. Now, insiders are calling him the mastermind behind their recent recruiting resurgence, saying he was ahead of the curve long before the rest of the country caught up.
Sean Magee Praised as Mastermind Behind Michigan Football’s Recruiting Success
Since Sherrone Moore took over for former coach Jim Harbaugh, things have been rocky in Ann Arbor, Michigan. But you can’t deny that, on the other side, General Manager Sean Magee is doing everything he can to keep things under control.
Beyond the “Connor Stalions sign-stealing” scandal, their recruiting progress has also been affected in the current NIL era. If you’ve been following the Wolverines during this recruiting cycle, you’ve likely noticed that their efforts were rocky.
During a recent discussion on ON3 Recruits, Michigan insider EJ Holland revealed how they are on staying on top.
“Michigan had a bit of a frustrating start to the recruiting process just because they weren’t talking numbers. Everybody else was. People were getting upset,” Holland said. “The recruiting class wasn’t looking as great as it should have been, especially coming off of last year’s strong finish.”
But while other programs rushed to throw money at prospects, Magee took smart steps. As a former naval officer and NFL executive with the Chicago Bears, Magee brought a disciplined and strategic mindset to Ann Arbor.
Holland emphasized that Magee knows how to balance budgets, manage expectations, and build trust.
“He knows how to deal with a salary cap,” he added. “…From talking to different agents that deal in the recruiting space specifically… They love his ideas. They love his plans.”
Even when the Wolves weren’t offering large NIL numbers, McGee’s vision continued to keep top prospects interested.

That vision paid off. Under Magee’s leadership, Michigan flipped Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class, from LSU, stunning the entire college football community. He also helped land elite offensive linemen Andrew Babalola and Ty Haywood, giving head coach Sherrone Moore a strong foundation to build on.
Magee has branded Michigan as a “unicorn” program that offers elite athletics, Ivy League-level academics, and access to one of the largest alumni networks in the world. All of this became possible because he thought beyond the arc and ahead of his time.
“I think Magee was ahead of the curve in terms of being prepared for the settlement and how those numbers were going to be distributed for recruits on the trail,” Holland said. Insights like these from insiders clarify that the Wolverines now have their architect.
Now, the Wolverines will just need to back it up on the field.
